I dumped the whole Windows OneCare suite, which I've been wanting to do that anyway since it's been a PITA from the beginning. Now I just need to find a decent antivirus program to dl. Anywho, I did the uninstall, rebooted, reinstalled WinMx, and...and...(insert suspense)...and ka-blam, it crashed again. Sigh. Sigh squared!

When it installs correctly, how many files should be in the directory? I am only seeing 3: the .exe, the uninstall, and one other oddly named file.

Well, at least I can rule out OneCare (unless some remnant is still in the system causing havoc!).

Thanks again for you time  on this!!

There should be more files. A couple of dat files must be there as well
Avast is a good antivirus. www.avast.com

I feel that something is preventing winmx from creating those dat files and hence the problem arisis
settings.dat, lib4.dat, winmxgroup.dat are some of the ones I have.
Do one thing: when you are installing winmx, see if the files appear at all. settingsa.dat is one that I believe will always occur.

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

Darn...
Ok well honestly I dont think you've lost anything there removing that.. in my research folks.. didnt seem thrilled with its performance and its inability to work with other software..

I agree Avast is great!

Did you reboot after the install?  Its possible things are still in there reaking havoc if you didnt..

You should have on a clean install
winmx.exe
Uninstall.exe
OLEDLG.DLL
Settings.dat

If you dont have all those somethings wrong.. so.. let me work on creating a clean MX Settings.dat file.. we'll start there.  I'll post back shortly.

Oh, what version of WinMX do you want to use?

"Did I reboot after the install?" Are you meaning once I tried to install WinMx? Since I got the error message I just did an uninstall. I'll try doing  the install again then reboot once it crashed to see if that makes any dif.

As for what version of WinMX, ummm, a working version. :-) What I should say is a version that my computer allows to work. Actually I don't know if I can answer that w/out reading up on the versions.

I'll check out Avast, thanks.

Hi Swampdonkey,

I meant reboot after uninstalling the Windows programs.  Often until a reboot they have files running.

As for the verions here is a brief over view of the differences ..

Quote from page I have pending...

WinMX has three versions that are its most widely used today, since FrontCode Technologies complied with the RIAA cease and desist order in Sept. of 2005.  The most popular by far is the WinMX v 3.54 beta 4, following closely behind is the WinMX v 3.53, the last official release.  There are a few folks out there that are still using the WinMX v.3.31.
You can get any of the versions patched from here:
WinMX Group Patch - Various Versions + Patch

Here we will talk briefly about some of the major differences and known issues regarding each version.

WinMX v3.31

WinMX v3.31 was first released on October 20th, 2002.  This release is still in use by many users today.  There are two major differences that the average user will notice between this model and the later ones, this is color support and the command style for chat room administration.

3.31 has no color support and using it in the chat rooms your likely to see lots of nick names with 'color codes' in the names, like #c1#[WMW]#c7#Me Here_324_34675 for example.  In a later version these actually appear as colors not just the codes which 3.31 is unable to process for viewing.

The second major difference is the commands that are used to execute things in the chat rooms.  This version uses RCMS (Remote Command Management System) style commands for carrying out the admin duties in rooms.

All other functions of this version remain the same as the next model and so if you don't use the Chat function in WinMX then this might well work just fine for you as well.

WinMX v3.53

WinMX v3.53 was first released on July 2nd, 2004. The biggest difference with this release was related to the chat room functions.

This version incorporated the IRC style commands instead of the RCMS style. Instead of the #AdminCmd kickban blah blah user name, you now have the /kickban blah blah user name, and so on.

This version also incorporated a feature on the Chat Screen called a Filter bar, and allowed you to set Favorite channels for a quick entry into your regular rooms.  The filter bar is capable of filtering any information to make finding rooms related to say 'Jazz', or 'Movies' easier to locate and refine your lists, you can also filter by Hex room numbers or words in the topic.
Being able to add rooms to Favorites List is a wonderful feature if your a regular chat user, simply add a room while your in it by going to the Commands button located under the user list, and choose Add To Favorites.  Or you can add them from the Chat Room Lists by right clicking and choosing Add To Favorites.  From the Favorites button located on the far right of the Chat Room List screen you can remove unwanted ones or simply click them to enter that channel.

The other feature that many users like is the color support viewable now in the chat. This feature is loved by many and the rooms hosted with Chat Server programs this makes it easy to have fun and decorate your room or make your user name that much more fun.

[subheading]Note:[/subheading] Not to confuse you however, this is for non WinMX Hosted rooms, such as Wcs, Ouka, FX, or the like or even viewable from your Chat Clients if you happen to be using those instead.  We can speculate that in order to compete with such programmers of the Chat Servers the folks at Frontcode Technologies may have had color support for WinMX hosted rooms in the plans but it never came to pass.

The basic file sharing functions of the client remained the same for the average user. So again if your using an older version and you don't use the Chat feature this upgrade is not a requirement.

WinMX v3.54 beta 4

WinMX v3.54 beta 4 was released for testing on December 12th, 2004.  As the name implies it was never an official release, there is wild, mad, and some sensible speculations about what was to come of the 3.54 series and what the next release would be officially however, again this was not to come to pass.

Most of the time we wouldn't recommend a beta versions of a program for regular use but, in the light of the events of Sept 20th, 2005 no further development is expected.  This version has been tested and is used by most users today.  There are many bug fixes from the earlier actual release that make this a more stable version to use.  Lets talk about that first.

There are two known bugs that many users saw with v3.53, the first was its tenacious way of finding yourself in the Auto Find Sources, and entering your own Que for incomplete files.  Sounds harmless enough but it was enough of an issue that they 'fixed' it in the later beta releases and most folks were relieved.
The second was a disconnection issue with v3.53 users and secondary when calling for a Chat Room List.

Another problem that seems to be seen less in the WinMX v3.54 series are crashes of the program or intermittent undue termination of the program as I like to call them.  Although, its fair to say there are many reasons this can be caused and it can happen with any version of WinMX it was more frequent for some users with the v3.53 and so if your having that problem we often recommend an upgrade in version to the beta.

Now lets talk about some of the feature upgrades you will see with WinMX v3.54 b4.

The added Chat functions are still the same for this version the most noticeable change in this one is the way the Shared files (now called Library) are handled.  You will notice a big change in the functionality of the Library in this version adding a much more precise ability to share specific files from folders or folders from drives, even giving you more freedom to unshare or share quickly needed files.
The rebuilding of the Library doesn't need to freeze up your WinMX which for folks that share large amount of files could take up to an hour with earlier versions.  This all happens quite seamlessly now.
The ability you have for full control over you shared files from the 'right click' Library Screen menu is great for accessing and controlling your shared files.
For more detailed information about how to share with this version and the tricks and tips to know please visit here:
How To Share on WinMX v3.54 beta 4

******************************************

Thats a lot of info, and maybe more then you wanted.. but its a good test run for a page im working on anyway for the site help section.. let me know which version you would prefer and I will put together a folder that you simply will unzip to Program Files and run.. we'll see if we can bypass this error.

May as well go for the WinMX v3.54 beta 4 version. I believe the one I previously had, based on the desciptions you so kindly provided, was 3.53.

I've since tried the install a few more times w/out success...

Thanks...

Ok Swampdonkey,

Here Below as an attachment is the WinMX.rar file, Simply un rar this and extract it to C:\Program Files  folder.  Once you have it extracted there I want you to first open the C:\Program Files\WinMX folder and find your Winmx.exe file   Right click this and choose 'Send To...'  Then choose 'Desktop - Create Desktop Shortcut'  This will add a short cut to the desk top for easy start up.

Now close that and use the shortcut on the desk top to start the program and tell me what happens next.
I made this install with the user name 'Swampdonkey'
Light Text on dark back ground.
Cable Connecton.
Unable to listen on TCP or send on UDP for now.
Incoming folder is C:\My Documents\My Music

I recommend that you change those above to the appropriate settings once the program opens and connects ok.. ..

Ok let me know how you get along here..

I felt pretty good about this attempt and possessed the highest of hopes, but alas, it was not meant to be. I did all that you suggested and here is what happened: when I used the desktop shortcut to the .exe, the load screen came up then the actual MinMX app could be seen, though it last about .5 seconds until the error screen put the lockdown on that. I tried it a few times, uninstalling and rebooting then adding the files again but each time the same thing happened.

Just a note and this may/may not be connected but I also dl torrent files using isohunt. Lately, when I dl the torrent files and save them to my HD, I am getting the same error screen that I am seeing when trying to run WinMX.

Are you ready to call it quits??  :- )

Thanks again for all your help!

OK plan 'B'.. well maybe we are up to plan .. G by now.. either way.. here goes

I want you to open your WinMX folder and delete the file named OLEDLG.DLL in it.

Then I want you to install from this file i will give you the url to.

Keep in mind this file im giving you is an older version of the patch, there are a few issues if your using say 'BendMX' or RCMS in how you need to install.  But since you havent mentioned those I will for now assume you dont have those installed.

Secondly this patch does not have the added filter of fake files from search results feature, it does however block them from using your connection to upload fakes.

httpss://archive.winmxworld.com/KingMacro/WinMX%20Connection%20Fix/Install-2.2-noMX.exe

Once you have deleted the OLEDLG.DLL file from your WinMX Folder, then install this file and try the shortfcut again to Start WinMX.. Im still thinking something about your IE7 is causing this.

Let me know how you do...

 Ooops.... I just found this thread and should have posted my problem in this one.

Anyhow I have exactly the same problem as the ones above, and have tried everything to get it working again with no success.
The efn thing just keeps closing/crashing within minutes of opening it.

I first noticed problems appear when the WinMX update bar had changed and an update notification message came up.
 :suspious: Coincidence???   Maybe, maybe not?

Hi tig,

Sorry but when WinMX started to crash recently I downloaded the latest patch and installed it thinking it might fix it.
(But it had the opposite effect and it crashes even more now.)

The darn thing just closes itself, no warning, no error messages, no nothing, it just closes.

It also doesn't save the shared folders into its memory when it shuts down and I have to TRY and add them to it again.
(Thats if I get that far before it shuts down again.)
When it does close down, the WinMX icon goes down to the task bar (In the hidden icons part.) but when i put the mouse pointer on it it disappears altogether.

:tired:  Its a difficult problem to diagnose when it won't say why it closes or even that it has.

WinMX did not crash, but I got a popup with an error message telling me to check log.txt in WinMX folder.  This is what it said.

31/01/2009 01:05:41 problems with the blocklist: err 3.-464309960

Can it be passed to Eagle as popup asked.

Running XP with SP3 and latest updates.   Was actually at work, so nobody on PC at time, WinMX did not crash, I remained in my room, no uploads or downloads according to MXMoni log, UTorrent completed a download and seeding, and Symantec Corp AntiVirus did an update.   Thats the most info I can think to post.

I would also like to know where you're downloading it from in case that file itself may be corrupt, which patch you are currently using, your operating system and antivirus even maybe if you wouldn't mind. Are you trying to use mxmoni or bend? That sort of stuff.
