Thanks for the help all.

BTW, is there a way that I can run that Windows command using something other than a windows2000 CD in the CD-ROM?  I can find my CD, but I have a copy of it on the hard drive.

Thanks,

Unfortunatly XP is the only version I am aware that has this scan.. I'd have to investigate but I'm pretty sure its not going work for your situation TrianThek.

I believe this is there on Systems other than XP as well. I vaguely recall it when I had windows 98
The command is not perhaps the same, but it is there...

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

I can assure you that Win98 doent have a system file checker..

Other utilities are on some other operating systems such as Scan Disk and Defrag.. however this is an XP feature the ability to use the Operating System Disk to make repairs to damaged system files.

Win98 does have the 'sfc' option, albeit without the /scannow switch. Not much good but it does let you extract/decompress files directly from the CD. WinME does away with it as they brought in restore points, which was a bad move, just as WinME as a whole was rubbish. From W2k 'sfc' has been there with various /switches with /scannow being the most used.

My system is Windows 2000.  The command works, however, it forces you to use a CD, which I can't seem to find.  I copied my CD to the hard drive, just in case something like this ever happened.  Is there a way for me to use this command in such a way that it accesses the folder I copied the disk to?

There is a way but you need to go into the registry and change the location windows was "installed from" so to speak. The registry key is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
in that key there is a string value called "SourcePath". Set it's value to the i386 directory where you have the copy of windows, e.g. c:\i386

Had an older install that I've not used in about 6 months. Tried to run the app but got errors. Uninstalled and dl'ed the new version. It gets to the load screen and the agreement page but pretty much once the agreement page is viewable a box pops up w/ the WinMX App has encounter a problem and needs to close....and asked to send error report.  I've tried to uninstall/reinstall a few times but no luck. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks much!!

remove it then download the latest one from www.winmxgroup.com, other versions have issues with IE7 which you have probably installed since you last used it

Tried that suggestion > once w/ no luck. It installs but once it begins to start the app the box appears w/ 'WinMX Application has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.'

Rather strange this all is.

completely remove it, uninstall, then delete the winmx folder (normally c:\program files\winmx), then reinstall, and select a different download directory than the one you are currently using
that should eliminate most winmx related issues that could be causing a problem, if that doesn't fix it then it's time to start looking at other software on the computer that might be interfering

I had already tried those suggestions w/out any luck. I'll just accept the fact that I'm SOL for the time being. Thanks for trying...I appreciate it.

Swamp,

Could you do me a favor?  Could you fill out this small 'questionere' for me.. lol

What version of WinMX are you intalling?
What version of WinMX did you have prior?
What is the exact name of the file your using to reinstall WinMx?
What Operatings system do you use?
What Antivirus software, spam, email protection, or spyware programs do you have installed (on or off)?
What caused you to reinstall, you said errors trying to use a older progam ?
What is your Browser you use at the moment, including version? ie: Internet Explorer, Firefox..etc?

I happen to live with the inherent view that no one is SOL.. lol Until we have exhausted all possiblities.. and until we know more about your system and your set up.. those cant have been exhausted...lol

Here is what I currently know:

What version of WinMX are you intalling?
   the file i dl'ed is named: Install-3.0-3.54b4.exe

What version of WinMX did you have prior?
i could not say but it was definately over a year old, likely closer to 1.5 years or so

What is the exact name of the file your using to reinstall WinMx?
   same as above: Install-3.0-3.54b4.exe

What Operatings system do you use?
   win xp sp2

What Antivirus software, spam, email protection, or spyware programs do you have installed (on or off)?
have some windows live onecare stuff w/ the firewall, defender (spyware), and antivirus

What caused you to reinstall, you said errors trying to use a older progam ?
I used to use WinMx all the time w/ thousands of shared files...then I took a hiatus. Came back and once I tried to run the app i got the message i mentioned prior. I figured that it was time to update, hoping this would alleviate the issue.

What is your Browser you use at the moment, including version? ie: Internet Explorer, Firefox..etc?
   ie 7

Btw, thanks for helping w/ this...much appreciated!!

Ok.. kewl now we are getting somewhere..

Ok that file is the correct one.. as for the older version we'll worry about that later..

I want you to un install Windows Defender, honestly ive not heard of it blocking a clean install but It absolutely doesnt work at all with WinMX.  There would be no transfers up or down once you did get past the license agreement so if you want to use WinMx (and I assume other p2p systems) get rid of it.

Then reboot.
Then reinstall from that same file and tell me what happens next please.

Yep, getting rid of Defender fixed it! Man, I wish I could have said that statement and had it been true...but no, I can not. I did the uninstall of Window Defender, rebooted, reinstalled but once you begin seeing some of that startup info for WinMx, the message box appears basicallly giving me a ooloo. So, what's next??

Thanks!

Swampdonkey,

Im not sure if your comments are just out of frustration or if I should take them at complete face value and say.. you wish it would have worked..LOL

Ok, so do I, however what is next is to disable the Windows OneCare and try installation again.  I have to tell you that the only time Ive seen this behavior with WinMX, as mentioned by KM is with older patch versions and IE7 (in beta from).  For that reason the patch was completely redesigned to work with IE7, and since you've tried removing the entire c:\program files\winmx folder..

The only other  thing about your system that is unfamiliar territory is the Windows OneCare.  So today I set off doing some reading about it.
I'm Not one of these people that you may have encountered that has a dislike for a program so tells everyone to remove it,  I hope you understand that I would never tell anyone to remove something that I thought was configurable.

That said Windows OneCare acts in such a way exactly as Defender, and for this reason and because again, as mentioned above I have never seen a WinMX application on any system work right with Defender, Im going to ask you to either disable the firewall in the WLOC or to uninstall it while you attempt the installation of WinMX.  Problem is that many things (protective software) that are known to cause issues with WinMX are still active even when disabled, there fore its difficult for me to say if simply disabling WLOC will allow you to install.

I honestly and speaking from lots of experience here, believe that the nature of this type of protection is whats causing your problems.  And for that reason believe this may never work with either of those two programs installed.

So whats plan C?  Disable it (I would personally remove it, install WinMX then reinstall the WLOC and go from there) but, am advising on the non radical side and saying try disabling it.

Barring that Im thinking about seeing if we can get you a folder already set up with basics and let you simply download it and unzip it, then making adjustments to the settings as you need and try that.  WinMX is pretty close to standalone type of application in that there are no registry keys or files and libraries it installs in other areas, the only other thing is a entry in the hosts file and that is for the update bar only, we could potentially deal with that in another way.

Disable the WLOC and try installing, post back to me Swamp.. thanks
