do you have a firewall running on your computer? if so which one? check to sure it is not blocking winmx (they will normally ask the first time they detected winmx running... if you accidentally clicked block it then you'll need to unblock it)

the only time you should have a problem like that would be if you were at work and they had set up proxies etc and prevented direct access, i am assuming the problems connecting are at home? (i'm also assuming that the 2 different usernames are the same user)

go to start > run and type in command then click OK, that should then bring up the command prompt   ("command" instead of "cmd" if using windows 98/ME)

then type in "telnet germany.winmxgroup.com 7950" and hit enter, it should come up with a load of "rubbish" along the lines of :

      d¬Y?«¨J½
              R#?Üq+

                    gÂûB¸ÄA9??ZpÑð^¾ùoí?bX©ýoéøÎ?Í)
                                                    Br?¢smè?NAÝ?½8ȧ?X÷=?@.>LUwä
j?îf??  R«\¥Æ?R?2_Yî´ßÂ\~?N÷???oÜ"µ¶¸Æ

(the exact "rubbish" that comes up will be different though)

let me know what happens...

Jeremy, did you actually deactivate the firewall that comes with xp?
It might be enabled by default without you ever noticing cause it's set to allow normal browsing, email etc...

check the status & setting of the XP firewall guideance here : https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/firewall.html
also if you have Norton AV 2005 or later check winmx is allowed in internet worm protection & finally check the possibility that some AOL security thing isn't interfereing.. AOL like to load your system with all kinds of crud you don't need.

update. ok, so i deleted the ws_32 dll and it doesn't seem to crashing any more but the bandwidth is crazy. after starting winmx bandwidth is high and then slows way down, every now and then it spikes back up  but then goes back down.  any thoughts?

===> To Roy

Could you tell the exact wording of the error? Anyway, I think that it may be a problem with your static ip. Do a dns flush and tell ua what has happened : Here's how to flush

Go to Start Menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt

Type :  ipconfig/flushdns

and hit enter.

====> To Jermey

Does it happen to downloads? Do you get uploads or search results? Are you able to download?
Does that affect any downloads or ulpoads or any queues you are in?
