Downloading speeds ????? very slow
« on: June 29, 2006, 01:40:21 pm »
Hi I am finding that my download speeds have dropped from a few minutes to hours. I have installed the new patch recently as well as changing my modem (currently using a SpeedTouch 330). I have set the correct ports in my firewall (Windows XP Firewall) and even turned the firewall off. I have primary connections but 0 secondary. I have been using TCPView to check my ports, it seems that TCP 6699 is fine but the UDP 6257 does not seem to be enabled. Could someone pleeeeease help

Remove your UDP rule and put it back. Are your uploads fine? Do you get search results? Keep the firewall on while you aren't doing anything. You must have atleast one firewall. Try to come to the winmxworld chatroom. Somebody can help you there.
Cop paste this in your filter bar in the chat window and click join WinMxWorld.com_E3D7EFD50D3D

Have tried removing UDP rule and putting it back to no avail. Uploads seem ok, a little slow maybe. I have no problem at all with search results. Firewall is on again, I only turned it off to test the theory.
Cant seem to get winmxworld chatroom to open will try later and post back. Thanx

If uploads are ok then all is well. It can take time for secondary users to connect to you. So that is not a problem. Everything is fine except a bt if time ;)

Have been on chatroom, the general idea is that my isp is throttling winmx. I shall have to look into this further

tiscali do throttle during peak times, if you find it is something related to the time of day then contact tiscali, firstly they failed to give you the notification that they claim to send out to any users they mess about with, and secondly they are actually filtering p2p and not merely putting you on more contended connections as they claim...

My current isp is Pipex Homecall, dont know if they throttle or not but the problem seems to be all the time not just at peak times. I will e-mail their technical support and see what they tell me

If you dont mind for the sake of other users could you let us know, also keep in mind that the Cable companies that throttle the worst also have a habit of lieing to the customer about it and so be persistant

As soon as I find out more I will certainly let you know, just waiting to hear from their tech team to see what rubbish they try and feed me

surprise surprise.......Pipex Homecall are part of Tiscali. Have been told to run some tests. I will keep posted with the results. Apparently I have a download speed of 270 KB/sec. I tested a theory and ran Limewire only to discover that it was near impossible to download anything. Watch This Space

Well there we go..........Confirmation that Pipex is part of Tiscali. Be warned anybody who is thinking of changing their ISP to Pipex. I'm off now to write some nasty letters and swear and curse a bit. If anybody has any suggestions of how to get around this I would be extremely grateful

Unfortunately it's often difficult, if not impossible, to get around traffic shaping these days as an increasing number of ISPs are using hardware capable of detecting specific traffic protocols, like the WinMX protocol, and then apply specific shaping rules on that protocol.  I don't believe you can do anything to work around this as a rule (though occassionally there are 'tricks' people can use) other than to look into another ISP, in particular one that does not traffic shape in this way (or any way preferably).

Another thing to watch out for nowadays is ISP Fair Usage Policies (FUP) and Sustainable Usage Policies (SUP) which specify how much data each package allows you transfer each month (total bandwitdh caps).  If you're going to think about changing ISP you'll probably want to find out about these things.

About the best place for info on UK broadband is http://www.adslguide.org.uk/.  The forums are really good for info.

Right, finally got some joy - refer to posting "WinMX friendly ports". I changed my UDP to 5000 and am now downloading and normal speeds.
