WARNING - WINMXKILLER.EXE
« on: July 05, 2006, 09:46:41 am »
My WinMX  just seemed to grind to a halt - nothing happening at all.  I checked my ZoneAlarm Security Suite  "Programs" section and discovered anb application called WINMXKILLER.EXE.  I blocked it out completely.  Now WinMX is back to normal.

I've never heard of this problem before.  Know anything about it? Who are they?

Winmxkiller.exe is a small file executed during patch installation, all it does is close winmx if it happens to be running, once installation of the patch concludes it is deleted...

At least that's the only winmxkiller.exe I've ever heard of.. I suppose there could be another somewhere...
Had you attached the (zipped) file or zipped & emailed it to a site admin or moderator with an explanation we may have been able to have positively identified it..

winmxkiller.exe is run during the install and if winmx is running it will close it, then pause while it waits for winmx to close, it shouldn't take more than a few seconds (winmx takes ages to close down) the only time that is run is during the install of the patch

I am not sure what the file is lovejoy, I also found that file on a relatives PC.

I removed it by botting into safemode and deleting the winmxkiller.exe found in the "c:\program files\winmx\"  folder. After I rebotted it, it seemed to be gone.
I would also recommend deleting the entire winmx folder and reinstalling a good copy from this site.

Hope this helps!
Best Regards, and Be Good!

Deletye all the files in temp too..I don't know about the exact details, but usually, installers put temporary fiels in the temp folder.

Cheers :P

winmxkiller is part of km's previous installer, it only runs at install time, & all it does is close winmx so the patch can go on, it should be automatically deleted after doing that job.. but if it isn't, it'll do no harm sitting there, any more than format.exe could format your hard drive without you starting it

if your really concerned about it thou you shouldnt be as merlin has rightly pointed out its harmlesss but renameing it to .old   so for example  winmxkiller.old   will fix it...............
by default windows will not execute any file with the .old extension  so effectively rendering it harmless................
