Information leaks involving Winny file-sharing software have prompted a domestic Internet service provider to send an unprecedented letter to users who have downloaded confidential data on mentally ill patients in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, asking them to delete the relevant file, industry sources said Thursday. KDDI Corp., which operates the DION Net access service network, sent copies of the letter by mail in response to a request sent to ISPs from Intec Inc., an information-processing firm based in Toyama, from which the information was originally leaked. Intec sent the request in response to instructions from the government of Takaoka, after personal information on about 1,500 patients with mental illness were unintentionally uploaded onto the Internet through Winny. It is the first time that an ISP has requested that users delete information downloaded from the Internet in connection with Winny software.
