Yes, I did undo the original Wizard setting from Proxy to no proxy...that was experimentation on my part.  However, as noted above, I redid the setup using setup Wizard..so everything went back to the original install settings.  Plus, prior to changing the setting from Proxy to no proxy...was the original install settings that did not allow me to connect.  That is why I was playing around with it.  Still, though, currently, I have a secondary connection/Proxy

Back to my original question.  How does WinMX determine the IP address for Socks4 proxy...is there a ping?
The address is close to my assigned IP and Gateway address.

As far as I'm aware WinMX can't find a socks4 proxy by any means. If you don't have valid, working IP for a proxy you have to have it blank and unticked.

Indeed, the IP of a socks proxy has to be entered manually, if you're on a network that uses one (sometimes corporate ones do) your network administrator will be able (but might be unwilling or demand why you want to know) to tell you the IP & port.  Otherwise in all normal circumstances you will leave it unused, occasionally if you use an anonymity service, you may need to enter one here too, but they should supply you with the details

Well, I have to say that something strange is going on, if what you say is true, because during the Wizard set-up,
WinMX selects proxy4 and enters an IP address with no port number.

So, I still can not connect, for some reason.

Bearded Blunder:

To be clear, I go through the Wizard set-up, then:

1) WinMx than performs an internet connection test.  That is, WinMX automatically configures itself to match my internet connection.
2) WinMX states that is was unable to make an outgoing TCP connection to it's test servers.  So I have 2 options:
    a) Retry the connection test
    b) I need to use a SOCKS proxy server to make outgoing connections

I select (b) since (a) only brings me back to (2)

When I get to the next WinMX Setup window.

3) Do you need to make OUTGOING TCP  connections through a proxy server?
It provides the following options:
(a) NO, do not use a proxy server for outgoing connectcions
(b) YES, use a proxy server with the following paramaters
SOCKS4       SOCKS5

Address
Login
Password

Resolve domain names using local operating system
Resolve domain names using DNS server at same address as proxy
Resolve domain names by passing through SOCKS5 protocol.

At this point, WinMX Setup window, HAS SELECTED
SOCKS4
Address: 192.168.0.1

I did not select SOCKS4 or enter an IP address.  So, it must be pulling this information from somewhere, ...which has thrown me.

I do not have the proxy server information.

I have my IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, dns addresses and mac address.

So, what is next at this point during the setup?

David to put it simply you have no proxy so you can not use that setting.. its happened before.. to folks, got set somehow..

What I'd like you to do for me is open your Settings in WinMX
Look for Outgoing TCP and set this to the first option

(X) Dont use a proxy server. (connect directly)

Then close this box, close WinMX and restart it.. tell me what happens please.
The reason the set up  fails is your ports are blocked.  You should also have seen an option to configure it manually which is this case is what we are doing.  Please try the above and let me know.

If you ping cache0.winmxgroup.com do you get replies?
Yes there are things that can be done within a netgear router that could prevent you connecting, at least if the firewall within it matches my netgear, however these would also prevent you downloading our recommended installer as the simplest one would be to block all access to the winmxgroup.com domain.
I suspect it's simply a case of something blocking winmx from connecting, most likely a firewall or norton worm protection (part of the anti virus), I'd recommend visiting the tutorials section & running step by step through the firewall one to set it (will then not matter if it's active or not & I have heard of it remaining active & showing as disabled..) & also the one for norton worm protection if applicable.

Thanks.  You are a genius.  That was it.  I disasbled Window's XP firewall before and that did not work.  However, I have Symanntic Antivirus...and it has a firewall. I did not know that.  Once I disabled the Symmantec firewall...instant connection.

Thanks again for EVERYONES patience with me.  I sincerely appreciate it.  You guys are the best!!!!  Cudos!!!!
