License Agreement when I open my WinMX app
« on: August 20, 2006, 12:36:26 pm »
HI! I'm new to the forum. Hope I'm doing this right!

So, I just opened my WinMX app, version 3.31 with "Install-3.0-MultiVer.exe" patch installed (I also installed "PIEPatch2.6.exe" back a year or so ago), and the program won't open until I "Accept" or "Decline" the "WinMX License Agreement" that pops up on my screen. It keeps mentioning "Frontcode Technologies, the publisher of the WinMX software".

The gist of the License Agreement is that you do not own the software, nor can you tamper with or distribute it, etc. There's a disclaimer in there too which reads --
THIS SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED ON AN "AS IS" BASIS, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING WARRANTIES THAT IT IS FREE OF DEFECTS, MERCHANTABLE, FIT FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE OR NON-INFRINGING.  THE USER AGREES THAT ANY USE OF THIS SOFTWARE OR ANY FILES DOWNLOADED WITH THIS SOFTWARE IS AT THE SOLE RISK OF THE USER.

Does anyone know anything about this? Is it okay to click "Accept Agreement"? I imagine if I choose "Decline Agreement" I won't be able to open the program at all. This has to be a very new item, coz I just opened the program earlier in the day with no problem.

I'm also wondering if I need to install yet another patch, one which I saw all over the WinMX Home page - that is, "Install-3.0-3.54b4.exe". As I mentioned above, I only just installed a patch ("Install-3.0-MultiVer.exe") a few months ago. Do I need to supercede that one now with the latest, apparently greatest new one???

Thanks for any help anyone can offer ... and thanks too for the great site, it's really nice to have this WinMX resource, since I love the program and am trying to stick with it, thru thick and thin!

jj007, that license agreement has always been there, and yes, you need to accept it.

The program hasn't been modified at all, so is still the original as supplied by frontcode.
The Patch you have is the most recent, and no, there's no need to change it.

Just keep in mind there's two kinds of patches out there, Pie patch is up to version 3.2 or something now, but it doesn't offer as many features as the one you already have, like blocking the riaa and filtering fakes from your searches.

The "Install-3.0-MultiVer.exe" contains 3 different versions to chose from to install with your patch, the "Install-3.0-3.54b4.exe" only contains the patch and the version 3.54beta 4, which is the latest supplied by frontcode.

Which version you want is completely up to you though :-)

If you feel more comfortable with your old version 3.31 that's fine to use, but I'd suggest giving the latest beta a try, it's very stable and has some advanced features like a better library system and the possibility to bookmark chatrooms.

Hi Jj007,

This license agreement should always come up on a new installation of WinMX.  What happens is that if in your WinMX folder there is not Settings.dat file found then the next time its restarted WinMX believes its not completely installed.

There can be a few reasons for this, most of the time its from a odd installation or from WinMX.exe actually being on the desktop but your Settings.dat file that was created is in another directory.

Do you have your Programs installed onto a C drive ?
Do you have a shortcut on the desktop?  If yes, can you right click and choose properties and tell me what the Target: path says?

If it only happened during the installation of the patch and isnt happening now then I wouldnt worry about it much.

Thanks for your very informative reply, you've resolved everything for me!

"...it doesn't offer as many features as the one you already have, like blocking the riaa and filtering fakes from your searches."

Well then, I'm psyched that my patch has so many great features packed into it, think I'll stick with that, and the 3.31 version of WinMX I've got. It is good to read the specifics about all those options tho, I did find that confusing at the time.

"that license agreement has always been there, and yes, you need to accept it."

Okay then, I'll check "Accept Agreement" next time I go song-searching, it was just odd to see that come up out of the blue, since I haven't added any patches or altered the program at all in a while. I'm not so sure I got that screen when I DID add that last patch a month or two ago - maybe it just got delayed somehow! : )

New quick question - Have you noticed lots of songs are coming up at odd bitrates lately, i.e. other than say, 128 or 160 or 192 - more like 211 and 236, bizarre ones that are not multiples of 32. On WinXP those play fine, but on my Win98 system (with older Windows Media Player), it's kinda screwy, the time of the song shows up wrong and then there's empty space at the end and the song progress bar rolls to the end. Not sure how it would play if burned to CD.

Thanks again for the great input -- jj007

Those i believe are variable bitrate songs, songs whose bitrate in not constant. These show the average bitrate of the song. I think that the songs may not be playing properly as they may not be compatiable with older players or systems.
But I think that they do play fine in Cd's

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

you could install winamp
www.winamp.com
on your 98 system, winamp plays variable bitrate mp3 files ok & also runs under 98, owing to a small bug (fixed in the new beta version, see news section of forum for download link) you will need to open winamp before playing any songs from within winmx as there is a problem if you try to play them without opening winamp first on win 9x/ME.

OK, thanks for all the feedback on the oddball bitrates I've been finding on WinMX lately.

Re. WinAmp, I had that at one time, but didn't like it for some reason, I forget why now. But I do have a coupla other players on my machine (MusicMatch and TDK player (came with a CD-burner I bot), so maybe I'll try those. Good to know too that they'll burn to CD okay.

So, how come I didn't get an email about all these replies to my inquiry anyway? I just happened to come in here coz I have another, new question - oh boy!....

Earlier in this dialog I asked about the WinMX patches and was told the "Install-3.0-MultiVer.exe" one I applied was best, with more features included than the "Install-3.0-3.54b4.exe" one I've been seeing on the site (it blocks the RIAA and weeds out fake song offerings), as well as the option to choose between 3 different downloads. My question is, do all 3 of those downloads include all those features? I got the feeling they did, the only difference between them being that each was for a different version of WinMX. So, I chose the one that said "3.31", my version, and that's the patch I installed. I hope I did that right and DID get all the features.

Under these posts you should have an option to 'Notify me of replies'  Make sure in your profie (if your registered) you have a valid and correct Email address and it should work fine.. if not please let me know I will have our Tech Team investigate...(yes that means KM).. lol

You said -- "Under these posts you should have an option to 'Notify me of replies' "

Well, I'm posting right now, and I see no such option. Where do I go exqctly to check off "Notify me of replies"?

Also wondering where I go to check out my "profile" - I do have such a purdy 'profile' after all!  :D Maybe that's where I indicate I want email notification, and I'm thinkin' I'd like to insert a picture with my entries too, which I suspect you do there as well. Think I'll go navigate after I post this, maybe I'll figure that out on my own!

Btw, I got the impression you HAD to register in order to post queries in here - isn't that right?

Glad to hear I did the patch thingie right, phew on that one.

Have yet to resolve the license issue (haven't been on my own home-computer since I posted that), but I suspect it'll be fine once I hit "Accept Agreement" next time I open the program and get the same license agreement pop-up. Last time I just left the thing on my screen when I closed down the puter.

I think I'm "Replying" to myself here, oh well, hope somebody sees this...

I just noticed I AM designated as a "Guest" in here. Not sure why, I did sign up the first time I went on, in order to post a question....at least I thought I registered! What was it I did exactly? I entered a screen name and my email address, and said I do not want my email address to be visible on the site....I'm confused.

I did think it odd that I have to type in some random "Code" everytime I post. I trust "Members" don't have to do that.

yes Jjoo7 you did register to make your first post, since then you have been posting as a guest.

This does explain why you dont see a notify option and why you have to enter a code to post.

To login you should see a option at the top of each page that says Login as: User name and Password

Once this is done you can see a Notify option at the bottom of the threads or as your posting, you also wont have to pass our 'are you a bot that wants to post porn and viagra and cheap medication threads all over the site' by entering those codes, we dont have that set for members to have to do.

So when you registered you were asked for a User Name and a Password, enter those and login in.. tell it to log you in each visit or stay logged in forever.. I do..   you will also see an option to visit your purdy Profile in the top of the main index.

A note we never have required that you regisgter to post, but I do prefer for folks to if they have been around and like what they see.  Hope that includes you.. lol
As for replying to yourself.. dont sweat it, just think of it as blogging...

Ohhhh, that explains it! Now I get it, I have to log in first, not as I'm posting a message as I've been doing. I think I got it right this time.

Also, how does someone know you're replying to them when there's just a single Reply button at the very bottom of the page, regardless of which message you're replying to? I mean, what if you're NOT replying to the last post on the page, what if you're replying to a prior message, how would that person know? i only see one single "Reply" button at the bottom of the window - right?

Also, I just checked out my Profile and viewed lots of options, but could not find where you insert an image to appear with each post. Where is that option exactly?

Loving this forum, believe I just logged in "forever", so thar ya go!!!

And YES, I see the "Notify me of replies" option now and have it checked, yee-haw, I'm gittin' there!

Frankly this type of reply system always confuses the hell outa me.. We could have chosen a board style that permitted this type of system but they like it better here if I am 'Not' confused all the time.. so we have to actually read.. most topics dont go too far off the original topic .. well this one has but most dont ..

In your profile click on Forum Profile Information, there you will see a place to upload a Avatar or to add things to your signature like mine is..

So now i concur with you .... Yee Hawww...

normally by quoting it as me here did above ;-)

but if you have threads then it gets much harder to follow, because it split off in to separate threads and trying to read them in the right order and in relation to what the poster had been reading when they replied etc... can get very confusing in some threads

Someone posts a problem
---Someone gives a suggestion
-------Original pster replies saying that fixed it
---Someone gives another suggestion
-------Original poster says it didn't work any more ideas

in date order that would make much more sense to read as:

Someone posts a problem
Someone gives a suggestion
Someone gives another suggestion
Original poster says the second suggestion didn't work but the first did

Chocolate God (that's odd to put down, have I got that right?)  :D said --
"normally by quoting it as me here did above"

OK, so how DOES one use the system quotes? I've just done it manually here, as you can tell (good ol' copy & paste).

I tried highlighting the passage I wanted quoted before hitting "Reply", but then some "Quickie Reply" setup came up, and much more of the quote than I wanted and indicated.

Gawd, I feel so lame! It's okay, you can be honest here!)  :(

ok Jjoo7,

Well who is she?  I have no idea who she was originally but I can tell you shes been with me so many years i feel like shes me.. so..

To quote.. you can click the 'Quote button before you post' but that gets you the entire post to quote, so what i do is this

Copy and paste what i want to quote, highlight it in my reply then click on the little icon above the text box here that looks like a little yellow post-it note.. lol   that will add quotes on either side..

Code: [Select]
text here
In order to add a name to it you have to do that manually as well (although if you use the first option 'Big Quote Button' on someones post  then it does this bit for you
Code: [Select]
text
Those are the bestest ways.. and dont feel bad.. as least your bothering to ask.. we get all sorts of posts that look like this:

I have important things to say and emotions to potray but I have no idea how to work these buttons....
Quote
:wierd smiley:
Code: [Select]

To quote.. you can click the 'Quote button before you post' but that gets you the entire post to quote, so what i do is this

Actually, that's what I meant to say I did when I got the "Quick Reply" box to enter my message in (wasn't so sure about that), and yeah, the ENTIRE MESSAGE came up as a quote rather than just the passage I highlighted and wished to use.

Still, I've used that technique here and just deleted the parts of the quote I didn't want. Now I'm just hoping the "Quick Reply" indicator to the left of this message box doesn't mangle my format!

A nod to Hot Chocolate too ... oops, I mean Milk Chocolate ... no, that's not it ... ummm, I know - Chocolate God ... yep, that's it  -- Got your message about using the Preview button, good idea! ...

NOT ... Just tried that and got an "Internal Server Error" page that came up instead of a Preview page, and I could not connect to the forum or these messages at all after that. Here's some more of the error message -- "The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request ... blah blah blah...." I'm not even sure it was the Preview command that caused the ruckus, it might've happened had I hit the "Post" button too, who knows.

Anyway, I hadda wait a whole day before I could get back in here to enter this reply - just happy to get it all out finally!
