Author Topic: Which WinMX Version to Install fresh with WinXP PC? (Read 6472 times)

I just got a Windows XP computer and want to install the latest greatest version of WinMX on it. So, I went to the download link on the WinMX website and found 2 options for the program with patch included. Do I install "WinMX 3.54b4 + Patch" (the download itself was labelled "Install-3.0-3.54b4.exe"), OR "Various WinMX Versions + Patch" (download labelled "Install-3.0-MultiVer.exe")?

Also, is the first option I just mentioned a BETA version? If so, is that even wise to install, considering it's not a fully-tested, bona fide, ready-for-market version (i.e. it could be BUGGY)???

that version was labeled as beta by frontcode, however it has several key improvements including a couple of bug fixes (as well as the improved library)

as for the beta label - is 3.53 buggy and unstable? it is the exact same code that was in 3.52 beta 8 just with the beta label removed, having beta in the version number does not mean it is unstable (2 years of tried and tested use confirm it as the most stable so far) the final beta in a series of tests eventually once confirmed stable the version number simply gets changed, if anything else is changed then it needs more testing so would never get out of beta.

3.54b4 had fixed all of the bugs found in previous betas and was good enough to remove the "beta" from the version number, it's just that frontcode stopped before they renamed it, and then eventually closed down.

3.54b4 is the most stable of them - it has stability improvements over 3.53 (which is stable enough, but has a few bugs) and the improved library of course, this is why it is the recommended version.

Well okay, 3.54b4 it is then! I had been using 3.31 on my old machine and wonder if I'll notice any difference. I just use it for basic song-downloading.

I assume also that the fresh version that comes "with patch" (which I downloaded) has the best patch available, coz for my prior version I was told the "3.0 multi-ver" one was best, having both an RIAA deterent and a way to eliminate fake song offerings in Searches. Trust this one does the same.

Also, the 3.54b4 version is only 932 KB, whereas the 3.0 Multiver one is 2.09 MB, I assume just because the 3.0 Multiver one comes with 3 different versions you can choose from, yes?

Just for the record: The WinMx Version is 3.54beta.
The Patch is 3.0 which is NOT a beta but a stable version including blocking the riaa and filtering fakes.
The WinMx program has not been altered at all, it just comes with something added so it will still connect (and do the blocking and filtering)

Okay, good, that's what I was hoping.

So, the 3.54b4 version I downloaded is simply the last version issued (3.5.3) with that 3.0 patch for RIAA blocking and filtering of fakes added in. Exactly what I wanted!

erm, half right... it's the latest winmx version that frontcode released which was 3.54b4 (not 3.53), with the latest winmxgroup patch which is currently 3.0 with the blocking and filtering of course

What are the benefits with this patch compared to the 3.0 patch?

Why arent there any noMX version of this patch (as there is for 3.0)?

Can this be installed on top of 3,54B4 + 3.0 patch, or should this be uninstalled first?

Features of the patch:

1.> This patch will automaticially forward ports on most routers.
2.> It has a brilliant option that enables the room list to be downloaded much faster.
3.> The flash screen looks much betters

One small this is ythat it has a small bug with opennap. It casues uploads to timeout sometimes. So if you ue opennap the iot is better that you stick to 3.0

I didn't understand the second part of your question.

Yes it can be installed over 3.0.

the small zip file would be the one without winmx included...

but yeh that's the beta version, and it has a pretty major bug with opennap actually, lol

the 3.1 bugs are so hard to fix i have scrapped the code for it and gone back to 3.0 and started adding stuff again, 3.5 beta shouldn't be too long just have a few design points to iron out with the settings

(pretty well answering overlap between you two there)

I don't use opennap much, so no big isue there, but looking on the other benefits;
autoset router ports (already done)
list rooms faster (i know where i'm heading)
favcier splash screen (too tired to notice that in the morning anyhow)

I guess i'll stick with 3.0 for now, until "god knows what" appears....

So, Iit sounds like I'm still okay with the 3.54b4 version you suggested I install back in Sept, yes? Not much into beta versions of anything, so I'll wait that out in favor of some 1.0 version I think.

OK, I went to that link and read HOW to get OpenNap, but what IS it exactly? Is it a way to link up with additional sharers from other p2p programs, and thus increase the music database I'm searching thru for songs?

It does also have many rare files.
Old mp3's, songs,etc
I got a lot of stuff from there which I did not get from winmx
Although I did get a lot lot more from winmx but still

Okay, but I read on Wikopedia just now that OpenNap only works in certain OS's, like Win XP, 2000, NT, Mac 10...not Win 98 SE which I have. Can I use it?
