Justin Frankel Interview for "Wired"
« on: October 05, 2006, 07:39:02 am »
This guy created two p2p apps in the past so thought its worth a read and we can ignore the plugs for his new software product  :lol:

(2 pages folks)

Quote
After selling his startup Nullsoft and the hit music application Winamp for $100 million to the world's then most powerful internet company, Frankel repaid his corporate handlers by developing unauthorized file-sharing applications, such as Gnutella and Waste, that set the music and media industries on their ear.

These days the spotlight may have moved on, but Frankel has lost nothing of his inventiveness -- or his subversiveness. Through his follow-up company, Cockos, he has developed a string of intriguing music applications over the past two years, including a networked collaboration tool called Ninjam that lets musicians play together simultaneously over the internet.

Interesting guy  :)

too bad winamps mp3 decoder never worked right (or even their 'custom' ogg decoder for that matter)

dont believe me? compare the sound of winamp to foobar2000 (or any other mp3 playing software for that matter.. the defunct sonique is a good example)... tell me which one sounds crisper and handles errors/glitches better...

note: nullsoft 'nitrate' got very close but they got sued for that decoder so it was never (to my knowledge) perfected

(sorry for yet another rant...)

ok ok.. any other mp3 playing software -but- windows media player (altho version 6.4 is semi-ok anything newer is ridiculous)... realplayers mp3 routines leave a bit to be desired as well....

for a better list of software to compare to winamp try these;

winplay3 (altho very very old (so old that there is a windows 3.1 version available) this was written by the ppl that invented mp3... you will have to google to find it)

foobar2000 (this uses the mpglib decoder... the same thing used by the decoding stage of lame and linux's xmms and mpg123... found at http://www.foobar2000.org/  this is by far the best example to use for comparison..)

sonique (this one went completely bye bye when lycos was bought by an asian company but it can still be found in software archives... you will need to google for this one as well.... note: use version 1.96; the 2.xx series is being made/maintained by another group now... note2; the provided ogg decoder in 1.96 was written before vorbis RC2 and will not play new vorbis files... look for nics rc2 vorbis plugin if you plan on making common use of sonique)

there is also a winamp plugin that replaces the default mp3 decoder with mpglib called in_mpg123 ... it is rather scarce these days so it will definitely need to be googled...

tell me what you think...
