I’m somewhat new to Winmx especially the OpenNap network. I’ve made a conscientious effort to follow procedures by reading the help/instruction files on the Tutorial web page. I’ve also used this Forum to find helpful tips or any do’s & don’ts. However, I need clarification on what’s the accepted method for accessing/using the network because it seems I’ve made a user(s) angry. While attempting to use the OpenNap network, I came across server messages (see excerpt below) that were directed at me (sonia_g919).

1.   [ShadowsNet] …..You are banned: shared only 333 files on LiquidShadow2.no-ip
2.   [oldies-chat]….You are banned:Share more.
3.   Someone (WinMX v3.54 beta 4) is trying to use your nic
4.   Amber Server Message: “if you are unhappy with the performance of this server/network, you're free to log off or send as many nasty messages as you want to sonia_g919

My question/comment about #1 & #2: is there an expected minimum number of files that I’m not aware of? I’ve been using Winmx for about 4 months and slowly but surely I’ve been ripping my music CDs and other audio files and getting them into my library (363 files so far). There have been countless numbers of users downloading from my library, which is great, and I have every intention of sharing lots more.

As for #3, I don’t have a clue what that message means. Can someone please tell me?

Last but not least is #4 which totally offended me.  :( I am at a loss as to what I could have done to negatively impact server performance. Nevertheless, instead of posting a server message advising users to send me “nasty messages,” why not send a message directly to me so that I’m given an opportunity to rectify the problem?
I would like a couple things made clear to me – first, is being antagonistic the norm among P2P users and secondly, is the sending of hateful messages to unknowing users permitted or perhaps even encouraged in P2P environments?
Thank you for allowing me to vent.

Simple solution:
You are not sharing enough files... Not according to me, according to them.
I allow anyone to come on my server, with no adult material...
admins have an option to send a notification if a used is banned, that is whay you see all that in #4 :)
Sounds a little rude, but that's what most people do when thay get banned, send nasty messages and act stupid.
Just forget about it. As you number of shared files increases, you'll see lesser of these problems.
I remember when I had ~700 files and  the server wanted 1000 files and 4000 mb....
I ignored them and carried on lol.

You'll typicially get unbanned in about 24 hours or so...
As for 3, probably you are logging on to  server which you have already logged in to. Change your name and see if that works (for opennap, right click the server name and click edit. You can change your username there)

Also remember: Some servers will ban you if you don't upload your file list quickly, normally this will happen when you try to connect to many servers at once. So connect to about 5-6 at one go.

Cherrs :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

hi bored5050

Welcome.. I suggest you go to your WinMX Settings > Internet Connection > On the tick boxes on the right choose 'Unknown' .  I dont usually recommend this and frankly its not what I would do personally.. but it will keep others from being sure whether you are or are not a Dial Up connection...

Myself I would add them to my ingnore list after I sent them my own message about why I wouldnt be allowing them to download my great files ...

Thank you for your quick response. Your explanation gave me some assurance that I haven't "violated any rules" that would have  negatively impacted anyone.

Hello, just signed up to this forum, I introduced myself in another post! Thanks to this forum, I´m able to use WinMX better than ever before. What I do with regards to file sharing is that I allow 3 uploads and 2 per user. I don´t use a filter to get rid of leeches or greedy people, I just cancel the leeches´uploads and I actually enjoy doing so. As far as the greedies go, I don´t mind if they put a bunch of stuff in my queue  or if my 3 users are uploading long files that will take all night... What I usually do is start the next person in the queue by hand. That´s not so bad is it? I think there is a certain  user who has me on ignore for some reason and they are the only person  who has some files in particular that I really REALLY want. I will change my username and see if I get any joy out of that. Or they may just have a problem with their connection because they always have 5 out of 5 available. I suspect it may be a problem on their end. I´m still to shy to message them and ask what their problem might be!

I forgot to add, I don´t care what kind of a connection people have. If 56k is all they have, so be it. If a person is only sharing like 10 files I will see what it is they´re sharing. If it´s a load of nothing, like stupid image files like 1.jpg or the like and they want a movie , then they get the heave-ho. If they are sharing a few songs then they don´t suffer my wrath ;P

I agree with you KittyBass .. thats very close to my own set up as for slots.. and how i manually start smaller files while i allow three larger files to upload..

About the message.. it does sound like thier end.. and you can always send them here or to the Help room we have on WinMX..

WinMxWorld.com Help

Its prolly something simple like a firewall or router config.. and they would enjoy WinMX mush more fixed..lol

Yeah, I changed my user name and it did the same thing, so I don´t have to have a complex for thinking I was on their ignore list. I just downloaded leechammer and it does make my life a lot easier. I didn´t realize you could customize it like that.  I´m still giving people a bump up if they want something small. I never thought about queue hogs until just after I started running it. This person queued up like 20 Doris day songs at once. The leechammer cancelled him and then eventually hammered them within 5 minutes because they kept queing loads and loads up.

I dont mind ppl queuing for albums.. all tracks.. its ok with me.. im set to allow two uploads per user so i still always have open slots for others.  To me them sitting in my que if they are patient and willing to wait for them doesnt cost me anything.. lol

Yeah, I suppose if someone wants a load of files, I assume they´re saying to themselves ´oh! that´s a good one! Oh, that´s another good one!´ Like I said before, I would give someone else a bump up if a user was downloading a large file or two. Granted, I didn´t know about queue ettiquete at first either so I assume someone is either very new or over enthusiastic.

Well, this just taught ME to be so nice. Yesterday I accidentally cancelled a user while I was trying to cancel a leech. I sent her a message apologizing for cancelling her and asked her to requeue so I could start her. I was also DLing from her. So she said no problem ..she logs off for a few hours and comes back online with 35 files.........mostly incomplete. So she in reality was a leech who must stockpile her files elsewhere so I should have let her be. The stuff she DL´d off me was nowhere to be seen.

I finally got the courage to message the user I´ve been trying to get some songs from for days now. I told them that I think there might be a problem with their connection. It went through so I´m definately not on ignore and they´re always at sharing 5 of 5

Thanks for the offer, you can browse me if you´d like. I have mostly music. I am die hard music and game nut, my other half is the movie buff. I´ve only been back online for about 3 weeks and I´ve probably got about 4000 files. Then again I´ve only had 2 occasions during those 2 weeks where I´ve turned the computer off over night!

I am not affraid to message users now. I messaged that guy and someone else who only had a 33.3 connection and they REALLY had something I wanted. They both replied and were very nice. But unfortunately for the lady, I had found the song elsewhere on the internet because I think it´s a free domain song because it´s a 78 from the early 1920´s so I actually found 2 versions of it in about a minute. I didn´t have the heart to cancel the lady´s UL because she was so nice so I left it going.
