Winmx pm help
« on: November 12, 2005, 11:25:09 am »
Winmx pm uses UDP protocol, its unreliable and after 2 years of saying "I can't pm you""did you get my pm"on Winmx I can't stand it anymore so I do this - join 1 good open nap network through Winmx with alll your friends/join a channel and add each other to hotlist. You can leave the room/log off/reboot/disconnect , it doesnt matter. If you don't change your names, your friends will show up as online in a permanant hotlist as soon as you log onto the network and the pm  is TCP protocol, works good just like a real messenger inside your winmx :).
For those who don't know how to open nap thru winmx, go to the winmx networks tab and press the OpenNap Protocol Networks button and press the add button, I use

Network: RockMep2p

Address:s1.rockmep2p.com
or:x.rockmep2p.com
or:ibdabad1.rockmep2p.com

You need 500 files totalling 1.2gb or more to use RockMep2p and child porn/rape/incest filenames are banned. If you register your name on the server, no-one else can use it on the network so create a login name and password and tick the Register username on next login when you are ready,,, press ok, hilite it in the server window and press the connect button.
Go to winmx chat tab and press the  List Channels button/select RockMep2p and fetch list. Join channel #hotlist or find each other thru filesearch and put each other on hotlist.
This method is working out good for me, i don't have any yahoo, msn, aim, icq network messengers and now i don't have to be in a chatroom to see my friends online or spend 70 seconds watching a winmx msg try to send.

I am new to the opennap path and I have one question. The instructions available through this site I've followed to the letter. Is it wise to select all, then connect to? My list shows hundreds of possible opennap connections.

Often times there are many out of date WSX files available, I find this annoying.  So here is what I do

Allow them all to connect (or try).. after a long enough time for them to be successful (this will vary) then i remove the ones that do not connect from my screen or cancel them to save they dont auto keep trying.

After I have done this a few times (different occactions to make sure) then i export and make my own list of current OpenNaps and only use that.  Frankly most folks dont need to be connected to hundreds as many of the same users are on several of the working ones there for likely to have the same content for the most part.

If I am just casually using the Naps 10 is fine for me, If I am trying to locate a rare file then I may use as many as 30 - 40 nap servers to do so..

I will not recommend that you select all of them and try to connect. That can slow down you connection and may cause problems.
In my case, explorer tripped sometimes whenI did that. I stopped doing that and so far, so good :P
Try about 20-25 at a time. Wait for no more than one minute. If they do not connect, then delete them straight away. The ones that do connect go to the top of tyour list and after you list has been uploaded (they have the message "sending xxxx of xxxx" till then), they become green.

Keep the ones that connect and dump the rest. I'lll recommend that you get the wsx files from people in chatrooms rather than from searches, as as Me Here said, most of them are dead.

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

opennap is pretty dead, there aren't many servers left (hence the problems finding ones that can connect)... it is very small compared to what it used to be

the best options for getting connected are either find someone in a chat room that is using opennap on several servers and get the servers they are using, or you can use napmx (although everyone seems to claim it doesn't work any more and hasn't for ages... it worked for me a few weeks ago when i tried it)

* Bearded Blunder always found msn & yahoo useful for staying in contact with people he met on here....

& yes the pm system sucks.. on RoboMX it particularly sucks.. makes WinMX itself look VERY reliable
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

I only found two files in a search, and I downloaded a few from the web site here. Loading only the two found through winmx search I thoght that was far too many servers to try to connect through.

I will try to connect to various locations and save a results file as suggested.
