All uploads time out
« on: December 21, 2006, 07:19:22 am »
I can download at great speeds any time of day but every upload connection times out. I'm using v3.54 with the DLL patch. I've checked and doubled checked my ports. They seem to be configured correctly. I mean, people can access my library and attempt to make connections. I would like to share my files but can't seem to find a fix. Any ideas?

that means inbound connections are blocked

firstly if you have a firewall check the connections are allowed in that (most firewalls will allow inbound connections if they allow outbound so probably not that, but always a good place to start)

secondly if you have a NAT router tripple check the ports are forwarded

thirdly check you don't have 2 NAT routers - many ISPs give users modems with built in NAT routers, then people go and but another NAT router and plug it in thinking they need one when they already have one (this is more common than you might think as many PC shops tell people they need to buy one to have 2 computers online and completely ignore the fact that they already have one and only need a hub/switch) - there are several ways the check but the simplest is to give us the make/model of the modem to see if it has a built in NAT router

Hi,

My connection at work, COVAD with a Linksys wireless router connected to the DSL modem, used to work flawlessly and I was able to upload up to 180 KBS, now, I have the same problem as the user originating this  thread.

BTW I hang out in 'the classical conection' chat, for those liking classical music.

hi Richard,

The first thing to check it the rules in the Linksys.. Linksys is infamous for change the IP assigned to the machine you're on and this may have been whats happen to you.  In the rules under the Advanced settings just make sure your IP 192.168.1.101 for example matchs the IP you get when you do Start > Run >   cmd  click OK.  Then in the MSDos box type      ipconfig     and Enter.  Make sure this is matching.. if its not remake the rules with the correct IP and be sure to set up static IPs for your Network.

The next thing that comes to mind is that Modem may have reenabled the NAT.  When running with a Modem that allows NAT and a router  that is NAT .. one of them has to be set to allow the IP to passthrough.  Usually people disable the NAT in the modem, which ever you did to get it working recheck that.  Im not 100% sure your modem will need it but if its truly a VPN it prolly will.

Thank you for the response, and the wink in your avatar.

The IP address is consistent, will chech about NAT

If all else fails Richard, Set up your WinMX to 'passive secondary mode'.. meaning Incoming TCP set to 'Unable..'  and In/Out UDP set the same.. restart as secondary.

This is not ideal but its one of my favorite features of WinMX allowing those that cant for what ever open ports and things.. still allow them to use WinMX quite well...

Thank you very much for your sugestion. I logg in as a primary ad set it to the highest use possible of bandwidth for network data to pass through as I have there larger bandwith (usually an effective 1.2 mbs up) but now seems not to be working and I don't want to mess with my employer's servers.

I noticed that when I went secondary I was aboe to get the chat room list and browse most users.

From home I use also Pando, may be winMx can use something similar as a plug in. Sometimes I get using it 'speeds' of 200KPS from home (apparently my ISP is not blocking these type of transfer yet). However, is not multipoint.

Most of the times the files I share are large, symphonies, operas, movies, et al.

I also use Skype, which uses  p2p, and from home, is almost unusable, just for chatting, but phone or the regular Skype and video, sucks.

Well, too much talking already.

I wish you a very happy Christmass annd Happy new year!! Thank you and the rest of this wonderful group for the great service, wish I was at your level of knowledge and contribute as much.

Thank you.

To get songs from a cd on to your pc for listening you have to rip the cd on to your pc. To do this simply open windows media player and click the rip tab at the top. Insert the cd if you havent already done so and click rip. If windows media player doesent automatically start ripping the songs click rip. Once all of the songs have finished ripping then they should be saved in >My Documents>My Music>Folder.

The folder will be the name of the cd. Then simply open the folder and all of the songs should be there. Then simply enjoy the songs you have ripped.

Then send the folder where the songs are placed or moved the songs to a folder which is being shared on winmx. Then refresh your files and you should be sharing them.

Just one reason that I don't usually recommend folks use Windows Media to rip files they intend to share.. Media player embeds personal information about the computer and there for user account that was used to rip the files.  Its not easy to spot but as I've said before if I can find it an expert can.  This makes it traceable to you or your Computer.

WinMX also wont share wma files, for this reason, by default (you have to manually 'make' WinMX see the file type).

So if your just going to listen to those files or save them as a back up for yourself that's fine.  If your planning on sharing them, I suggest another ripping program is best to use for that.

does this mean that others would be able to upload with no time outs?
