Download Speed Slow
« on: December 22, 2006, 07:13:55 pm »
Hi.
I'm pretty new using WinMX and was wondering why my download speeds are so low. I have a cable connection with download speeds of 14MBs/sec ( thats what the cable co says). I've only once achieved anything over 40KBs/sec. Average is 4-20KBs. In using Limewire I can get over 300KBs on a regular basis.

Do I have something set wrong?

I went through the Bandwidth Throttle tutorial and set my outgoing speed to what it recommended (does that have any effect on downloading?). I left incoming setting unticked.

Thanks....

Try seeing the bandwidth with severaal downloads running at the same time. At 14mb download speed, the speeds that you get depends on the uplaod capacity of the person you are trying to downlaod from. And lesser on your speed :)
I believe that you are fine. Just that you need to find enough sources with good upload capacities so that you download speeds are good.

Cheers :P

your download speed on winmx is governed by the person you're downloading from's upload speed almost always this is SUBSTANTIALLY less than they can download at, 40K/s is all i could SEND data at on my 10 meg connection, assuming i had no throttle set & nothing else running, with only one slot open.. values in the 5-20 K/s range for downloads from a single user as typical represent good speeeds.. faster is lucky, & won't happen often
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

Thanks for the replys.

One more question.
I've been running Limewire and WinMX at the same time. Is there anything that might get messed up by doing so?  It seems to work OK. Although WinMX kicks butt all over Limewire there's some files I can get quicker through Limewire, but I have to sift through tons of garbage to find the right one.

Are there any other good P2Ps out there?

Thanks
Milkdud

BTW......You guys run a great board here  :D

Personaly I have seen that winmx has almost any file that i have ever wanted...
But there are some other P2P's as well,
bittorrent seems to be as the next best one.

I'll recommend that you try out opennap with winmx. It's a really amazing place for finding rare files.
For more info go there:

You can get working servers from here: https://forum.winmxworld.com/index.php?topic=3947

Thanks once again for the advice.
I tried what you suggested about the OpenNap and have a bunch of networks now but not sure what to do. I downloaded them and they connected.

By connecting to these networks will I get search results from them and the normal way I would if I didn't connect to the networks? Or does it only search the networks I connected with using OpenNap?

It says that it doesn't support Multi-source downloading. Does that mean if I search these networks and two or three networks have the same file it will only download from one network or does it mean that it will not download from more than one source per network?

Thanks again and Merry Christmas.
Milkdud

PS Not sure if you noticed it or not but you have especially spelled wrong in your sig. Interesting sig by the way.

If you try to download from two networks, then you'll end up downloading the same file over twice. You will download again. So don't keep on clicking :)

Also you can search the normal way, just as you dl for winmx.

Ty for the mistake in the signature :). I never knew people actually read it

Merry Christmas :)
Cheers :P

you also have other spelling mistakes in it (google toolbar has a built in spell checker for any website you are entering text in to, very useful)

but i thought the typos were deliberate to see if anyone read your signature, so i didn't mention them because i wanted you to think nobody read it ;-)

(i think i actually edited your signature a while back to change the room name but left the typos in there for you... think it was your signature anyway)

"so i didn't mention them because i wanted you to think nobody read it"
That's mean....LOL

I tried bittorrent but it seems most of the stuff (movies) require a password to open the rar files they have and that you have to go to a forum and pay them money first before you get the PW.

Are all torrent related P2P's like this?

Are there any other P2P's you'd recommend that aren't torrent related or ones that are but don't have these rip-offs hosting files?

Thanks again.

If you want torrents, go to www.piratebay.org
Download bittorrent from www.bittorrent.com

Thanks for the heads up on torrentspy and piratebay. Will Piratebay be a better source for torrents (i.e. less/no passwords)?

I was searching the web for alternate P2Ps and ran across a site that compares them and had remarks from people concerning them. The one they had listed as #1 was Shareaza.  I downloaded it and have used it for about 12 hours now and am pretty impressed with the program. It has a real slick design and seems to have just about everything and easy to use.

The WinMX program seems like it's still in the rough as far as the design goes. It's real clumbsy.

Shareaza doesn't seem to have quite as many sources as WinMX but it has the Bitzi option which I liked in Limewire plus a reviews option which is really cool. I've gotten some great download speeds on it.

Has anyone tried it?

Limewire....
Not one result on any speech I tried. Plus they have started filtering results now.
winmx with opennap... don't ask lol you are literially flooded with results to choose and they come up fast too...
Choose whatever you want. it's your option.

Just a tip: many sites offer P2P with Viruses, trojans, spyware, adware in them....
you'd better make 100% sure you have the official site else a legit source. Scan it for viruses and trojans as soon as you downlaod the file and don't install if you feel uncomfertable.

Winmx is a bit well, not exactly the pick of the lot, but it is to me the best P2P ever. It has a great and helpful community. Not something you'll find with all P2P. Plus, you can chat with other users as well. It is a cow sometimes, ok manytimes, but you still love it lol.
When it went down, I never deleted it.. I kept trying it until I found winmxworld in late march.

Use bittorrent if you want large files. Piratebay needs no registeration to either download torrents or browse them.

Cheers :P

Thanks Sam.
I found out the hard way about the malware embedded in some of these programs.  I downloaded the exe from fileplanet (I think).  It was my first try with a P2P since Napster went tits up.  I ended up with the Win32... bots and such.  Took forever to get things back to normal.  I scanned it with Windows Live OneCare before I opened it and it said it was fine.

I'm using two anti virus/spyware programs now (other is AVG 7.5 ), so I feel pretty confident that if one doesn't catch something, the other will.  I'd dump the Windows.... but it has caught stuff on my system that AVG doesn't see.

I've found out of the four programs I've used; Limewire, WinMX, Bittorrent and Shareaza that WinMX is the only one that I've been able to chat with people. The others have the option (not sure about bittorrent) but it either doesn't work or nobody responds.

I've tried running three programs at the same time and seems to work fine although Limewire really sucks up the RAM.

Do the developers of WinMX plan on sprucing it up?

Happy New Year Sam :)

The developers of winmx shut the site down and hence all development of the client is dead.
But there are programmers , like emulator, who still code for winmx :)
So the few things that you don't find is winmx can usually be found with any third party program.

I'm not sure about this, but I think that winmx was the first P2P to have a proper system to allow interaction between it's users. Last time I used limewire, it seems to have a room system too. Which came out only later. Plus winmx had unicode support for a long long time.

In how many other P2P can you have a movie of 700 mb with 3 mb to go, can you message the user at the other end to start you?. And they actually do start you in most cases.

Cheers :P

Not many from what I've seen so far.

I see you collect radio broadcasts.  My mother was a disc jockey during WWII at a local station in Long Beach, CA.  She still has many of the iron 33's from the station. Not sure what they are but I've heard a few of them. One was "The Last Message From Corregidor" or something like that.  Have you heard it?

I'm surprised no one mentioned what is more than likely the answer for captmilkdud's speed gripes: ISP capping. Yes, your ISP is probably capping your download speed with the WinMX protocol at about 512kbps. Typical ISP's are greedy liars and cowardly thieves, which means don't bother asking them because they'll lie about it.

Encryption all the way, and WinMX should be using it by now.

If ISP's cap, then they either reduce the speeds to zero or say 2-3 kb/sec
And winmx packets are already encrypted.
There is nothing that can be done unles a new client is released, which seems but a dream.
They identify typical handshakes between clients and they block those.
Visit the protocol discusstion section. You'll see some posts related to that matter, the main one has been stickd at the top
