download problem
« on: January 05, 2007, 10:38:25 pm »
Hi everybody,

For the last 2 weeks I couldn't download any file. I get connected to winmx normally and I upload normally but I don't know why I can not download. I get queued to the same 3 or 4 users and then they get timed out.

Please help me in a simple language cause I am not familiar with many technical terms.

Thank you.

Hi Alex, download problems are usually caused by simple setup errors in either a router, modem, firewall, port setting or perhaps your connection patch.

If you could gather some information on what equipment and software (firewall/windows xp ?) you have and your rough setup along with winmx connection type (pri/sec) and version etc we would be able to help you figure out a solution a little faster, there are many causes but I,m confident with some extra input we can target the problem precisely and have you downloading in a short time.

If you have a router,
go to www.portforward.com/routers.htm and see your router model there.
A tutorial on how to forward ports for winmx is given there.
Check if your firewall has allowed winmx and see (only if you have another firewall) if the windows firewall is off. It does turm itself on sometimes, so just double check.

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)
Patch link :

Spread the word now :)

Thank you very much for your kind attention and please be patient with me.

All what I know I've been using winmx for two years. The equipment is sony (vaio) software is windows xp, other than that I don't know much.
I've changed the incoming TCP and in/out UDP many times but the problem was the same. I use cable for internet connection.
Please take in consideration that I do not know almost nothing (router or firewall...etc).

One more time, please when you say firewall for example tell me how to find it then how to fix it.

Thank you again I really apreciate your help.

Hi alex007

Its difficult to help you with you not being sure what your set up is.. so im going to suggest you get this tool and install it.. let it do a scan of your PC..its not a antivirus tool..it simply scans your PC and tells you everything thats installed.. including firewalls.. but not things like routers.. usually.. so .. give this a try then maybe you can find any protective types of programs and list them for us..

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

If your using XP you have a built in firewall also, its located in the Control Panel > Firewall Icon.  Here you should see if its on or off.. and let us know that as well.

Id also like to know the names of any devices you have.  These will be boxes with blinking lights inbetween where your internet comes from the wall and the computer.  If your unsure list everything you see but we do need name and model numbers to help you.  Its also going to be helpful if you can tell us do you have Cable internet provider (from Cable TV company)  or DSL internet provider (from phone company)

Let us know when you have this info Alex we, or if you have any more questions.. its what were here for to help you.

Hi Everybody,
Thank you again for your kind attention.

The information I have is as follows:
1- I am using cable internet from a cable tv company with a wirless router motorola SEG900. I tried to do port forwarding following the instruction in the web provided but I couldn't because the menu in  my router website doesn't have "port forwarding" option. it has only "port triggers" option.
2- I couldn't find any firewall icons in the control panel of my computer. The internet connection firewall is disabled "unchecked" in the control panel.
3- I did install the " belarc advisor" and I've got a report and I'm attaching it with this messege.
4- I did uninstalled norton and I replaced it with avg.

I hope you find this info helpful to you so you can solve my problem.

Please forgive my ignorance dealing with computer!!!

Its ok Alex that you dont know about computers.. your learning.. we all are learning.. some of us just know more about different things, so dont worry about that.

As for that Router/Modem.. do you see a page that looks like this:

* courtesy of www.portforward.com *

Also about the firewall are you on XP?  If so your firewall maybe in Control Panel > Network Connections Icon > Right click your 'local area connection'  and choose properties.  When the next 'dialogue box' opens you should see a tab on top that is called 'Advanced'  There you can check if that Firewall is on for me.  (only xp users will have this)

Alex what i suggest you try is what we call passive secondary.   You can do this by going into WinMX Settings > Incoming TCP - Set this to 'Unable to Listen on...' option.. then in Settings > In/Out UDP - Set this to 'Unable to Send or receive'...  Just until we get this fixed for you..

Keep in mind while your in passive mode your WinMX should work.. but if your testing configurations or changes you have made to the router.. (if you choose to try to do that )  this will need to be reversed for that.

Im just looking at a way to get you working for now.. until you learn more about your machine and WinMX..and we figure out whats causing your problems..

Thank you "me here"

I've already mentioned that I saw the page of the router and it doesn't have "port forwarding" but it has "status/wan/lan/port triggers/log" .

Also, I've already mentioned that in control panel the internet connection firewall is not checked. I don't have it like on or off I have a box to be checked to enable firewall, that box is not checked / marked.

I've tried to send you a private messege but it did not go through!

Thank you very much "muchas gracias"

if there are any options within your router to enable upnp then it might be worth trying the betapatch, last time i looked this was linked from the downloads page at www.winmxgroup.com look for Install-3.1-MultiVer.exe
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

Ron its not likely that your going to be able to make a primary connection, I cant be 100% sure as I dont know your exact set up but those types of set ups often you dont have access to the router configuration.  Without that your going to have to use a Secondary connection.

The way to know is to call your ISP and ask about forwarding ports for a program.

As for the files.. violet/purple is good.. means the file is waiting in line with other users, this means you are Remotely Queued for it and will get your chance when its your turn.
Red means the file has not connected for some reason to any other users and it could be just no sources for it available or they are offline.. etc.. or it could be a fake.. many many things can cause them to go red.

Where you see the (+) sign beside the file names be sure to click this and it will then show you the names of the users that it has found to get the file from.  Here if there are reasons for the file to 'turn red' the messages will be visible .

I wouild suggest that you have a look through some of the tutorials on site that can help you get aquainted with some of the basic funtions and help you to enjoy WinMX.

WinMX Basics
Messages you will see in the Transfers screen

Just a few i recommend to get you started...
