UDP Connctions and Outgoing Connections(Socks 4&5)
« on: January 09, 2007, 02:34:32 am »
Hi All,
This is my first post on here so bear with me.
I have been using WinMX for 3 years now and have found it to a fantastic program. Have met some great people along the way too.
But as of the last 3 months or so, sharing of files has become almost impossible.
I have used as suggested Portforward.com to set up my modem router.......very handy........and yes my settings were saved...still no luck.
I have re-installed the latest version of MX and the latest patches.......sent all my older versions to the recycle bin to avoid possible cross contamination.......still no luck.
The only thing that I can think of now is the Proxy server setting Socks 4 and 5. However I'm not sure how to set this up, or if I'm on the right track here.
If anyone can help me here it would be greatly appreciated, as I have always shared my files and don't want to seen as a leech
Thanks
Fenderfreek.... :(

from where did you install winmx?
Check if your downlaod was from www.winmxgroup.com

If you have a normal internet connection at home, then you do not need a proxy. Select the do not use proxy option.

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)
Patch link :

Spread the word now :)

Thanks for the reply.
Yes I did download WinMX from the official website.
I have checked all firewall and virus software as to whether or not it is being blocked there.
Everything seems fine.
Is there anyway this process of setting up WinMX can be simplified?
In the 3 years I have been using MX, it seems to hve become more complicated by the month. Although I do appreciate that they have made things more difficult as well.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

hi fenderfreek

Welcome to the site.  This sounds to me like either a misconfigured router/modem or firewall or its even possible its ISP.  The fact you said 'sharing of files has become almost impossible'  what do you mean by this exactly.  The use of the word 'almost' would indicate that some transfers do get through, and this would help to diagnose.

Id also if you dont mind like to ask what version of WinMX you have?
What Firewalls/Antivirus you have installed (even disabled ones please)?
What is the name and model of the router/modem you have?

I hear what your saying about the configurations but actually .. since WinMX hasn't changed in literally years now its actually the ISP and router/modem/antivirus/firewalls that have become harder to configure.. WinMX has always acted as a virtual server and this makes things different then your average p2p.  As i said to someone a few days ago.. 'you call it difficult, i call it versatile..lol'....

Let me know im sure we can get you fixed up here.

Hi Again,
The WinMx version is 3.5.4.0. the Modem Router I have is a D-Link DSL-G604T, I am running Windows XP with service pack2 update.
And I shouldn't have embellished, it IS impossible for ppl to upload from me.
I wonder with all the auto bots out there for downloads and leeches why we someone cant figure put a auto config. Big ask these days I suppose. I am just starting to get frustrated!!.....lol
Cheers

Ok FenderFreek,

Lets get started here.. before I do, dont take anything I say wrong, Im not explaining ever last detail and assuming your a idiot its just we all can make mistakes, and my being thorough now may save you time later and so Im just going to go through this with ya sorta...

On the DLink There is a site that shows you the process of set up pretty simply, and although as mentioned above I have no doubts of your ability to do said, its best to be sure (its a starting place).
Portforwarding Guide for D-Link DSL-G604T

When you access that router and get to the Port Forwarding section be sure you have selected the correct IP from the drop down, infact this IP may have been 'reassigned' by the router and so just verify also its the correct IP there.

Verify the IP:  Click Start > Run > Type in    cmd   then click OK, now in the black MSDos Command Prompt type in    ipconfig    then hit the Enter key.

Be sure the IP Address listed here matches the one you choose from the 'LAN IP' drop down on the D-Link.
Once you have done this just go back through those rules for me.

Double check you have it set similar to this:

Select the 'User' radial button in Category, then highlight your existing rules for WinMX and click 'Edit' or Click Add to make new ones..

In the boxes be sure your information matches the ports
Name: WinMX  Protocol: TCP Start Port: 59000 Map Port: 59000 End Port: 59000   'Apply' then do move on to the UDP port (making sure that same IP is still in the drop down)
Name: WinMX Protocol: UDP Start Port: 59500 Map Port: 59500 End Port: 59500 and 'Apply'.
Then again at the Portforwarding page be sure those are added to your 'Applied Rules' and that the 'LAN IP' is still correct.  And 'Apply' again.

Next lets make sure that the XP hasnt turned on that XP Firewall again (very common problem) in the Control Panel make sure the Firewall is OFF if your using the Kaspersky Firewall.  There is no need to have two going however, if you only use the Kaspersky AV software and no Firewall, and you normally have the XP one enabled just go through these instructions to make sure the correct respective ports are set.
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/firewalls-xp-sp2.html

As for the Kaspersky this is going to depend on what version/software you have installed, again it may require more configuration then normal because WinMX acts as a Virtual Server, So its got to have full access for both TCP IN and Out and, UDP IN and Out.  Im not finding a 'good' guide to this however make sure that the WinMX.exe file is listed in the 'Trusted Zone' for your model.  We have been seeing a lot of 'anti spam' type of programs blocking WinMX Traffic and I cant say for sure whether you may have that problem with Kaspersky because I dont use it, I do know it can be a bear to get configured correctly for WinMX and that recent updates could have changed something.  Just be sure to go through that carefully.

Your other programs mentioned dont seem to be likely suspects for creating issues..
Let me know what you find out or if any of this helps you.
