Okay... I've tried this using Win98se and it doesn't work... however, is there a way to put these addresses into the nservers.dat file to allow WinMX to find them that way?  Just a thought.

INSTRUCTIONS THAT WORK
« Reply #343 on: September 25, 2005, 02:48:43 am »
To patch winmx...........first close it, then
1. download hosts  file
2.right click it
3. extract to      C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ETC
4. extract to exactly that file as shown, reopen winmx, youre connected, its simple.
5. the trick to the patch is that you have to hand type where to extract it.  It didnt work at first for me because i had no system32 file, it was hidden...
6.goodluck....

I'm NEVER gonna Post a message like THIS again.... NEVER!!
... I just like the people and I'm just to Anal-Retentive NOT to HELP!
        >> Like the UserName says ... basicly   "X-Large F**Kup" <<
       >>*So I'm a nobody, take what's here with DUE CAUTION!*<<

WinMX Crashing... that error that makes it wanna close...
Before looking for Worms... be sure (on a 40Gig) you have rebooted and
have 17% to 22% Free Space on C:\ for WinMX to Use as Working Space .
Larger Drives .... use a Relitive Amount - the more free space the better.
XP will longer w/o/ReBoot than older OS's. ReBoot Older OS's occasionaly.
Defragging helps alot before you ReBoot, expecially if your doing MOVIES.
WinMX may or may not do the ReAssembling the individual Packets that
are actually being Sent/Recieved Acording to "Windows Specs".
Defrag Does This.THEN do the Hunt-&-Kill the WORM thing if it still crashes.

=============================================                                Get the BETTER hosts File:
                 http://www.vladd44.com/files/splithosts.zip

Be Sure that WinMX is CLOSED/Shut Down.
SEARCH Windows or WINNT folder for "hosts" file
Rename that file in the SEARCH WINDOW to "Oldhosts".
Right Click and COPY the file, then PAST it someplace for Backup.

***  NEVER Open or View Contents of Windows/WINNT Folder!!!  ***

Go to the .zip folder with NEW "hosts" file and EXTRACT TO:....
the last folder in the filepath shown in SEARCH WINDOW (Details View).

Operating System:
XP            C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\  hosts file HERE
2000 & ME??   C:\WINNT\System32\Drivers\etc\  hosts file HERE
98se         C:\Windows\  hosts file HERE

START WinMX and leave it sit there to Connect,
                           However LONG IT TAKES=WILL WORK!
(Simplest Foolproof way I can X-Plain "How To..")
=============================================

Get and USE "Peer Guardian 2", Plus the ALLOW and BLOCK lists needed.
Read through the Tutorial of the program.
IF your HERE ... duh!! .. just click on the Tutorials Link at top of page.
**...and read SEVERAL other ones while your there...**

If WinMX doesn't connect in the first few minutes... just leave it there
trying... it's connect sooner or later.   !! It WILL WORK !!

Try and WATCH that "Finding Sorce" doesn't produce HUNDREDS of
Sorces. In my "TOTALLY UNFOUNDED/SUBSTANTIATED OPINION"
..these files go directly those FALSE DATABASES "Flooding"...
...and should be DELEATED IMEDIATLY as I think it crashes WinMX
... when it gets UP THERE a ways ... like over 800.

Be sure to set "Allocated Bandwidth" to the highest Level
                                       -  IF AND WHEN  -
you just LEAVE WinMX TO RUN and/or your NOT ACTUALLY USING IT...
 * Settings, WinMX PEER NETWORK board, Allocated Bandwidth window. *
 * This is that you DON'T USE, your LENDING IT TO the WinMX Network  *
                 * for the routing of Secondary Connections...  *
   * The MORE PRIMARIES that do this, the better the network will flow. *

In my opinion, running 1 to 3 slots works better... ONE if your sending
Albums. Each individual job completes quicker.

Avoid the "Flooding" files by actually Making Friends in the CHATS!!

NOW... get up and GO WASH YOUR FACE... STEP OUTSIDE... BREATH...
... FORGET MOST ALL THE RUMERS FLYING BY WORD OF MOUTH...
... ... then come back in, crank up WinMX and have FUN, FUN, FUN !!
Use the CHAT Channels, get The WinAMP Player and find a room that will
let you use the "DJ" function ... and WorkIT !!
Play music & run your mouth. >-[find APPROPRIATE room for YOU FIRST!]

     Peace... I'm outta here...

                                                                             (I heard that...)

I have winmx and can't get it to work anymore.  When it comes to computers and files and downloading patches I'm a moron.
Can you tell me what to do so pc illiterates like myself can get it back up and running. Once I get to the patch what do I do? Where do I unzip it? Do I delete my old winmx file or will the patch find my files by itself and fix it. I told you I was a moron when it came to this stuff so your time and expertise would be appreciated. Also what is Sherwood? Is that another mp3 sharing site or another fix it for winmx.
Thanks again,
Brian

NO, it doesn't take aeons to log in.

But sometimes you have to wait sime hours ( !!! ) to log in. Not enough primary / servers are up !

BUT .. it'll be better with every single one back to the network-

Excellent post The Great BooBoo   :D

I would add to anyone having problems installing go to here:

https://forum.winmxworld.com/viewtopic.php?t=430

for detailed instrucions, places to get the hosts files, and self installer is listed on the homepage.

And PLEASE if your connected use Peerguardian to keep these RIAA pricks from doing what they tried to do on Sept. 20th....

USE PEER GUARDIAN IF YOUR CONNECTED VIA PRIMARY!!
