download/upload speeds running slow suddenly
« on: February 11, 2007, 09:26:38 pm »
Hello,  I am hoping someone can help me as I am not all that computer literate.  I have been using winmx for about four years and have weathered the many problems because I really love winmx.  I use v3.53 and have a DSL connection and connect with a primary connection.  I don't have a firewall.

Up until about a month ago my download and upload speeds were fine.  Then all of a sudden the speeds dropped dramatically to less than 2 kbs/second on all uploads and downloads.  I don't know enough about the technicalities to troubleshoot or fix this and I didn't change any settings so I am at a loss as to what happened.  I really appreciate any advise you can give me.

Thank you so much,
JT

JT i suggest you call your ISP and see if they can talk to you about this.. the reason being your on Optimum Online which is a division or affiliate with Cablevision. They are known to throttle p2p in some areas and have been doing so for years.. its quite likely they have started it in your area recently.

Please also keep in mind this is typical.. you wake up one day and they are throttling WinMX and you go through weeks of settings that were never changed.. tying to diagnose only to find its the ISP doing it.  Its also very common for them to lie about it when you call to ask, if your not very persistent.  Some ppl on Optimum have had luck with Port changes however, most companies doing this now are using software that throttles by packet.. I would suggest you call them after reading through some of this info.. its about Rogers mainly but it pertains to you as well if this is really whats wrong.

If you had issues with just some uploads or just some downloads or things were not connecting then I'd say yer maybe its firewall or settings related.. this sounds like the ISP to me.

Suggestions for port changes
Information and links to info about throttling

Do let us know if you call and what you find out.. or if you do change ports and they work please post  the ones you used for others to use.

Hi.  Ive got the same problem.  Slow download speed, less then 1.00.  I have the windows firewall and McAfee firewall.  If I turn the windows firewall off, will it help?  Cant this be dangerous to tuirn off my firewall, or is McAfee enough?

hi Dogturner,

Yes you should use 'a' firewall.. McAfee is plenty of one.. so try disabling the XP firewall and see if that helps.. frankly its often times not  the problem as it either blocks the upload completely or lets it through completely.

Having both enabled however could be an issue..

Its also worth noting that any spam filters, or antispam programs running can have an effect as well as ISP.  Im not aware that Verizon is doing any throttling per say, however, that said they may throttle some heavy users,  maybe, so calling them to see about it may be an idea for you as well.  Its not something I generally have seen with Verizon tho.

Let me know how you get along with XP firewall disabled.

JT, I'm having exactly the same problem. I'm based in Philippines and I called my ISP. They told me the slower download speeds are because of an earthquake in the region in late Dec 06 which damaged the undersea cables that carry internet traffic. As a result, the bandwidth is now less until the damage cables are repaired - around Feb 21 I was told. I'm hoping thats all the problem is, but I'll have to wait and see.

if that were the case you'd have problems with everything, not just winmx... websites would be slow to load for example

if you can download files from websites at a normal speed but not from winmx then your ISP is throttling winmx traffic - the download from a website proves the bandwidth is there, winmx not using that bandwidth means something is stopping it doing so (ie. your ISP)

Get a bandwidth test from a websiter.
There are numerous ones available
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
google "bandwidth test" and you will get other sites...

This was the first hit one it
<----- a bit too lazy this afternoon  to post anyother

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

i'm having similar problems too, i can upload at any speed i choose but downloading is about 4k or less for a few minutes then times out.my isp is freedom to surf and they say they're not throttling winmx.i'm using 3.53 with correct patch
i unticked worm protection in norton anti virus and tried windows firewall instead but is no different,
i've tried unticking unable to accept tcp/udp in the settings menu and tried different ports.
i also use soulseek and get very good downloads from it had 128k downloads recently from it
could norton anti virus have anything to do it with even though i'm no longer using it as a firewall,it comes with sysytem works 2005 which was installed around the time i started having these problems

Hi Marc

Normally things like firewalls, antivirus, and port issues are not going to be seen as slow speeds.. they work or they dont.. so my best suggestion for you is to come by the Help room on WinMX so that we can test your download speeds there.. see them real time.. its possible its the users your getting files from.

Click Chat button on WinMX, say Yes to the warning.. (if you havent used chat before).
Copy and paste this name into your Filter bar

WinMxWorld.com Help_E3D7EFD50D3D

then Click Join of the far right...

Freedom2Surf limit bittorrent bandwidth during certain times of the day. If they do it with that I would assume they do it with all p2p apps.
Here's a link to confirm it. http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs

it was funny but when i came out of the chat room and rebooted  i had the best performance i've ever had from winmx, when i contacted freedom2surf they had put traffic shaping in place but this was removed on the 8th february so it should work ok now,i've had it working good some days since but mostly its bad ,where as soulseek works good every time at all times or is soul seek something different

Unfortunately Marc,

WinMX is one of the p2p systems that is easy to pick on, due to protocol within the program.  Its not that its 'something' different its simply programed better or its possible that the software used to throttle isnt programmed to pick up SoulSeek ....

I'm also having upload and download issues. Sometimes the speeds are fast and then suddenly slow again and then I get "connection reset by peer" and uploads get disconnected.  :(

Hi Nightingale,
Welcome to the site, Im not as familiar with your ISP (internet Service Provider) but this sounds like typical problems they cause as well.  Make sure you have the correct patch, and are on a stable connection.

If your Update bar (under the WinMX verions information in the title bar) says Patch Operational then your ok there, if not please reinstall from here

www.winmxgroup.com

If that is ok or once you reinstall you still have this problem, make sure that you are sharing files, even if they are free files, applications or something and try some more.  If this still continues I would suggest you find your way to our Help room located on WinMX by following these directions

https://forum.winmxworld.com/index.php?topic=4357.0.html

And let us test things for you there in real time..

Hi  Me Here

I'm using WinMX3.54 beta 4 (and also MXmonitor - in case that's important info) and it says "Patch Operational". I am sharing tons of files.

Tomorrow I will go to the help room.

Thanks very much for your reply and welcome. :)

Datmo reinstalling for that update bar is not needed, its just that.. an update bar to alert you if updates are released.  It has not barring on the actual patch function.

If that bar goes back to blank then just restart WinMX, if its still blank come by the chat room and we can talk about the reasons.. but just remember its not about your patch function.
