If you are trying to run WinMx on Microsoft Vista and are experiencing compatability issues this can be quickly and easily corrected by following the instructions below. If you complete these steps please leave your feedback...

Microsft Vista comes pre-installed with something called "Program Compatability" which allows you to install and run software written for earlier versions of Microsoft Windows as though they were actually running on the earlier version of Windows instead of Vista. This will correct any incompatability issues arising from the new Vista version of Windows.

1. First install the WinMx program to your computer, if it is already installed just continue to the next step.

2. Click on the "Windows Logo" on the left to bring up the programs menu and click on "Help and Support"

3. When that opens type "Compatability" in the search box at the top and then click the "Magnifying Glass"

4. Click on Number 3 "Start the Program Compatability Wizard

5. Then click "Click to open the Program Compatability Wizard" and the program will open

6. On the first screen just click "Next"

7. On the second screen click "Next" again

8. A search will begin and a list of all the software programs installed on your computer will come up, locate "WinMx," click it, and then click "Next"

9. Choose the compatability mode to run the program under (the one most recommended to run the program) and click "Next"

10. Just click "Next" on this screen, do not make any changes to anything

11. On this screen check "Run this program as an administrator" and click "Next"

12. This is the confirmation screen, just click "Next"

13. A box will popup that says "A Program Needs Your Permission To Continue," just click "Continue"

14. The program will open so you can verify it is running correctly with the new setting, just close it out, and click "Next" on the screen this will set the program to always use these compatability settings everytime you run it

15. Select "Yes" or "No" to send this information to Microsoft and click "Next"

16. A confirmation will be displayed on the screen confirming the successfull adjustments made to the program, just click "Finish"

You are all done... Hope this helps all you Microsoft Vista users out there...[/size]

There is an easyer way. Right click on WinMx icon. click on Properties,  top right is the compatability tab. This is also the case with all installed programs.

Alfred's advice worked for me - I used the Windows 98 compatibilty!!!  So far so good - and I had not been able to stay connected or download before.  I was getting an error code every time I would try to download.

For loading or setting up new programs, you can preset the compatibility on the setup program, which should help load the program (I was having trouble loading some utilities on client systems)

As an additive your using compatibility, when ever you can use the direct method, Properties:Compatibility, that is a lot quicker, but if it doesn't take or work, maybe the full wizard might be necessary.

If you are buying a new system, insist on the XP OS (Pro version), as Vista does stink, and even when they fix it, it will still be an overly glutted piece of crap.

I don't see why so many people are having such problems with Vista and winmx. I installed Vista premium and installed winmx and it has never caused me any problems....=\
