Record Labels Tale Of Woe
« on: March 15, 2007, 08:58:22 am »
As usual folks the old violin can be heard in the background as we hear the record companies whine about how evil customers are choosing to only download the music they like rather than purchase Cd's at the inflated and unreasonable prices when compared to a single CD track.

Physical CD sales have been in decline for the last five years, and according to various estimates are expected to fall another 15%-20% again this year. And while digital revenue is on the rise, it is not yet reversing the trend. Sony BMG global digital business president Thomas Hesse says that if physical revenue drops by 15%, digital revenue must rise by 60% to compensate. This year, he expects net revenue to fall.

So what are labels doing other than licensing their music to digital services that they hope will become successful? According to many service providers and industry analysts, the answer is -- nothing.

"There's no plan, no sense of direction," one digital retailer executive says. "They're just hoping somebody is going to figure all this out for them."

Lets face it, if theses bozo's got into the download market in a more expansive way and made sure folks got the music they wanted at a more reasonable price 95% of all infringement would evaporate, the fact that they haven't and are largely in the marketplace complaining about apple and p2p networks is just a case of sour grapes brought on by their own lethargic apathy.

Very true GS.
One thing I would like to point out, is that the figures offered by Mr. Hesse are ridiculous. Digital revenues would not need to to rise that much in order to compensate. After all, there is next to no expense in digital transmission compared to the expense of producing physical media!

But I am sure they would not like us to think for ourselves, and eat every spoonful of crap they offer...

Best Regards, and Be Good!

I think that they can more than well live on the loot they have ammased from past years for generations to come.

60% heh. How much time is it going to take for them to increase download costs on the pretext of 'servers' or 'bandwidth costs'

Cheers :P
