Crossmx
« on: March 20, 2007, 11:21:23 am »
I spotted this site up and mostly running today.

http://www.crossmx.com/

Quote
Crossmx is a newly developed and purpose written chat and file sharing client, earmarked to be the replacement for the now out of date Winmx client. Testing of the new Crossmx client, is due in the near future [Spring 2007]

Crossmx is being billed as the first full Winmx replacement application. It is expected to allow users to both chat and share their files, with a full capability to host chat channel, handling both primary and secondary connection to the network.

Crossmx is a project developed by a Winmx user known as Bughunter from a group known as TSC. The Crossmx project will see the first cross-platform application as it is expected to support IRC, Ares chat and have features for Bit Torrent.

Crossmx is also expected to be compatable with Windows, Linux, BSD and even apple Mac.

What worries me regarding this is that it seems to be promising a lot of functions and features, evrything from bit torrent to Ares and IRC, and all this as well as being  multiplatform (eg: windows and linux compatible).
This to me is a lot of work for one person who so far has not said much in public regarding this project.

I hope something is delivered from this project and that it does infact have something to do with the WPN protocol, when I read words like "replacement" it starts to sound like an effort to hijack winmx users to another network rather than actually help move this one along.
Lets hope this is not the case and for now wish some good luck on this mammoth project BugHunter has set herself.

i did have a look and something caught my eye, it maybe nothing...

As time has passed though, with no ongoing development, it was time for a new project to begin, a project thats hoped will rid the community of the need for patches and addons, and unite users with a brand new client, Crossmx.

I have been watching this for a while now Max, 2 months ago it was going to be beta tested in a few days , now its sounding further off again, this is in reality good news as any quickly delivered offering is likely to be a bug fest.

A period of months are what  I expect a serious undetaking should take, the link above and where I first heard about the project are run by the same person I believe, and that person is not the programmer so we have to take whats said with some salt, but I,m sure we all like to see new things... as long as they dont damage the existing network.

This is a disappointment to many I,m sure but maybe a blessing in disguise really, a winmx only client is preferable in the long term as it can be built without compromising certain in-built security features that the existing client has and maybe thats a benefit to us all.

I,m sure we will hear of this again later on in the year.

Why would the circuit and stuff blow up because of a power outage?  that never happens here.

hmmmm yeah... A breaker is a little slow to react and I've never seen something like that yet... I'm saying it's a strange concidence to make a great program and then, that big project had stopped because everything had exploded...

well over here i think my fuses would trip out 1st if not my surge protectors would stem anything that got thrugh them & if a power problem in the street took my net out it would have to be a lightning bolt, as neither my phone line or cable are connected to mains power & if they was i think i would have the engineer up on attempted murder charges who installed them

well a few months ago we had a power out, the whole city was out suddenly and to cap it all, that was a day when England was playing in the world cup, the electic company was swamped with people wanting power on, and it took several hours, coming on just before the England game, phew, all i lost was the stuff i was working on at the time, and the room of corse, but not whole programs on my hard drive.

Well the December storm we had here, was a bad one lol.  Over 1.5 Million people without power here. :(

But ours went off at midnight, came back on at 6am. But some people were without it for almost 1-2 weeks.  Cable took 20 hours to come back on.

Heh! I'd like to lost electricity here for one week! If I'm studying electronic and don't have electricity then I have no school. But in winter with nothing to warm the house, it will be very frozen... -20 degree cecius... I don't think I will enjoy that  :?

It's also very rare to lost electricity here... that's why it can be good but in summer lol.

crossmx.com doesn't belong to any of us. I am still trying to find out who it does belong to. I have my suspicions, but I can't say anything more about who, till I can prove it. It seems to be a site built by an opportunist who may be looking to make a profit off someone else's work.

BugHunter lives out in the middle of nowhere in Croatia...not some place I could say would be the most modern place to live.  I believe her. She has never lied to me nor ever had a reason to.

Now I will leave you people to do what you do best...make fun of others, insult them, make accusations, assume things you know nothing about, etc.

Have fun.

Well then all I can say is time will tell.
But undertaking such a project and not backing it up is silly. I mean so much hard work down the drain...

Such claims of making clients have been made more than once only to have some "unforseen" circumstances which prevent development or any releases, which does make it hard to believe it...
But as I said, time will tell as to who is right.

Cheers :P

Can I suggest that its you that is making assumptions April, I have merely reported on a project you have been publicising and used information that was posted by yourself.

You have mentioned in public postings many things that are factually incorrect for what you have claimed for this proposed client, user are not ignorant and not gullible enough to believe all your claims. You may notice I havent claimed anything of Bughunter who throughout this has made no public postings, all information has come from yourself and therefore any flaws in that information are yours alone.

Heres a brief run down of your claims to date.

1  Bughunter had two hardrives fail losing all her work on this project some days after your initial announcement some months ago.

2  Her two computers both are written off by a power problem in the street and her whole house was damaged, this was once again following publicity.

3 You have claimed she is a professional programmer and yet this does not seem to be the case as any pro would always back up important work.

4 You mentioned the primary protocols in another conversation, stating that Bughunter would have to disassemble winmx "again" to gain this information, this is both the wrong way to gain this information and also illegal and in breach of the terms and conditions of the program as well as being an insult to the program owners winmx technologies.

5  I received information that this project will never be able to work with the mac O/S as the kernel is closed src and therefore no information exists to implement any client on the platform.

These are the reasons for my scepticism, whilst I,m sure you mean well some of the claims are rather fantastic  and in all probability exaggerated, if we do see some fruit from this project I will of course welcome the effort put in and congratulate Bughunter myself along with many here, but for the reasons stated above perhaps if you claimed less for this it may get a fair hearing instead of being a multiple platform 4 network client that is not likely to ever appear.

I know of others who are quietly working on clients and partial clients who dont want a lot of publicity but want the community to benefit from their work, they of course will have something concrete to deliver, and as you posted in another forum this whole project could now be just vapourware, this is both something poor to tell the community after all the hype and is defeatist.

Promising things and then repeatedly disappointing folks is perhaps a good reason for you to claim nothing more on the programmers behalf.

1  Bughunter had two hardrives fail losing all her work on this project some days after your initial announcement some months ago.

Get your facts straight...the one HD failure occurred in December, the project didn't begin till January...older work was lost...the BugMX work. She was able to recover most of that from me & Krish. The stuff that is lost was something she had been working on for that client. In the process of recovering what was lost and recreating it, that was how CrossMX was born.

After fixing some bugs in the code of BugMX, she decided, why stop there? why not keep going? why not make it better? So she started coding it again from scratch...and improving it, making the code cross-platform compatible, supporting more things, rewriting Martin's Ares class in delphi, adding full irc support, tossing in an HTTP downloader, and an FTP one...tossing in code from a previous BT client project she had been working on for herself. Completely redesigning the GUI from scratch.

You make claims that she has said nothing publicly about anything related to this project. What qualifies as public? Posting on this forum? Isn't her statements made in a PUBLIC chatroom enough? Too bad you weren't there to see them. But that doesn't make it any less public.

I asked her if it was ok to announce this project before I did it. And nothing I said was factually incorrect, it was all based on her words. The purpose of that post in the TSC blog that announced this project was to gather feature requests from users.

Was I wrong in thinking the users should have some say in what features they would like to see in a client that would be eventually offered to them?

I guess I have spent too much time as part of a programming community that unites developers with users in a common goal to produce the best software possible. We include the end users in the development process, never forgetting that is them that we are writing for. Somehow this is wrong? Well, excuse me, I am sorry you think that way. But that doesn't mean I will stop thinking that it is the right thing to do.

Following what publicity? My last posting on this project was in January...it's March. Again...the crossmx.com site isn't ours. We have nothing to do with it. The publicity you speak of is your own announcements here and the opportunistic endeavors of some jerk most likely looking to make money off this project.

screenshot of her March 18 email to me:

3 You have claimed she is a professional programmer and yet this does not seem to be the case as any pro would always back up important work.

Important work would be stuff she gets paid for. I don't remember anybody paying her to code BugMX.

And the CrossMX code isn't lost.

It's just that the speed of her current pc isn't all that great. If she is attempting to do this in D6, which is what she was doing, she can't on this laptop. She could never run D6 with those specs. I could barely do it with my P1 and 64 mb ram.

Most likely she will have to use D2, which means some code will have to be rewritten, as the D6 components she wrote will not work in her D2 IDE. Add that to having a painfully slow computer to deal with.

4 You mentioned the primary protocols in another conversation, stating that Bughunter would have to disassemble winmx "again" to gain this information, this is both the wrong way to gain this information and also illegal and in breach of the terms and conditions of the program as well as being an insult to the program owners winmx technologies.

get it through your head...frontcode isn't coming back, there will be no winmx 4, they are not going to hand over the source to anyone, any work that gets done, no matter how it gets done, will have to be done by a 3rd party, any way that they can. I would think that getting it right would be better than doing it all wrong and hurting the network. Keeping this network alive and moving it forward is the biggest compliment that you can give to the creators of winmx. And unlike some others, the motive isn't money...Crossmx was to be free...as free as the original winmx.

Quote
5  I received information that this project will never be able to work with the mac O/S as the kernel is closed src and therefore no information exists to implement any client on the platform.

The windows kernel is also closed source, yet developers write software for windows...how can this be?

And your statement implies that there is no 3rd party software not made by apple that will run on a mac...how rediculous...maybe you should google 'software download mac'

If you knew anything at all, you would know that there is only 1 code base needed in object pascal. It can be compiled with Delphi for windows, and with Lazarus to run on Linux, BSD, and Mac.

Her biggest problem is getting a copy of Mac OSX for PearPC...she can't afford it and like I said before, I don't remember anybody paying her to develop this project. Plus there is no way possible she is going to be able to run Mac OSX in PearPC on that laptop. And without being able to do that, she can't compile a Mac version.

I just love how you take the misfortunes of others as an opportunity to rip them apart. Shame on you. What happened to her is a disastrous tragedy. If the wiring in her house was damaged, this could have been an even worse tragedy...it could have started a fire and she could have lost her life. I am more concerned for the well being my friend than the project she was working on. I am more worried about how she is surviving than how long it will take for her to finish this project or if it will ever be finished. BugHunter means more to me than CrossMX. I wouldn't consider trading her for a p2p client...even the best one in the world.

Kind of fits with what I said before though:

Now I will leave you people to do what you do best...make fun of others, insult them, make accusations, assume things you know nothing about, etc.
