I've just change broadband suppliers, virgin to sky. So now I have a Netgear Router and now my uploads timeout! When I do the set-up wizard on winmx it cant configure my TCP port. I went to http://winmx.dnsalias.com I get this result

"TCP port 6699 is closed. File operations (up/downloads and browsing) including chatroom hosting will probably fail due to this.

UDP port 6257 is open. Searches and Chatroom listings should be okay."

Where can I find out which port I should be using?

No I've no, it worked for a bit last night but very slow but its gone again. Now it wont even connect, I've got it set on secondary connection as when I try to go on primary it says I cant as there's no TCP for incoming/or outgoing. I have my firewall turned off. I dont know what if any info you need (except that its a NETGEAR Super Wireless ADSL Router DG834GT) so let me know plz

THERE ARE LOTS OF SETTINGS AND STUFF ON MY ROUTER SETTINGS PAGE BUT i'VE NO IDEA WHAT TO LOOK FOR.

hi xlaurax,

Ok first of all, its likely that your WinMX ports are not set up properly yet and there fore you get a message of no tcp/udp. You will also need to configure your new netgear to allow the ports there. Dont worry we have guides for you. My only concern really is this 'it wont even connect' now stuff. That is usually one of three things.
1. a firewall blocking WinMX Connection to the internet. (you say yours are turned off, does this also include the XP Firewall if you are on xp?)
2. a damaged or misinstalled patch. (Make sure your WinMX and/or Patch says Patch Operational on the top or that you got it from www.winmxgroup.com )
3. an ISP that is blocking connection at certain times of the day. There are some in the UK and Europe area that are doing this Tiscali/Pipex for one. This isnt what you want to hear when you first sign up to an ISP but Sky are notorious for throttling speeds on WinMX and other P2P meaning cut you down to nearly nothing for transfers, and I guess its possible they had adapted this same policy as Tiscali blocking the actual connection at certain times. We have not heard or seen this from Sky yet tho, so its not time to panic.

The second thing we need to find out is what you have or have not done .. like say just before the post that says 'its all fixed now' did you configure anything in the netgear, did you install anything? things like this..

Thanks for your help, I've had a quick look at what I've to do and it looks like I'll need a bit piece n quiet to go through it all, and as its my wee boy's birthday I'm not going to get that just now so I'll wait till later and let you know how I get on.

if you can get into your sky router you are very lucky, my sister is with sky and my mum now is and i have had to install the 3.1 patch to get them to conect, the netgear router supplyed by sky that they both have is pass worded and they dont supply you with the code's. i tried all the default pass i new and give up in the ended and cheated, the upnp part works great though on the netgear router's so if you dont have much luck post back here and im sure someone will send you the link to a old beta test patch.

Right I've uninstalled and reinstalled wimnx to make sure I've got the latest patch. The connaction is ok now I'm connecting without any problems must have been because I was fidling about that it wouldnt connect in earlier post. So firefall is off(xp firewall) I've went to my router setting and done the necessery (i think) to open the port but I still get unable to recieve incoming TCP.

While looking on the net for netgear help I came across this

is the Built-in Port Forwarding settings bit what i'm doing or something different.

I've got winmx running just now and although it says unable to recieve TCP it has connected both up/downloads but they are quite slow but I dont know if slow my end or the other persons end!!! downloads 2/3 k/s uploads 2/8 k/s

I figured out the problem, my Mc Afee had a firewall enabled

so its connected able to recive TCP and UDP, uploading downloading at reasonable rate a bit erratic/unstable but its going.

Ok xLaurax,

Sounds like that file you found is some new firmware that is not made by Netgear, as long as you have it working fine id avoid it for now. Let us know if you have any problems.

Hi, again. MX is still being a bit hectic, I'm able to recieve both TCP and UDP but down and uploads are very slow and timeout quite a bit. I tried switching to Primary Connection to see if it would help any. But no!! But I noticed on the bandwidth screen it's saying at the bottom toolbar that I'm recieving and sending out a lot, I've took a screenshot can you have a look see if this is normal. Plz

Also I've unistalled McAfee for the time being and XP firefall is off so there's nothing blocking anything.

Ok Laura,

First of all the bandwith graph looks about right. The orange is 'network' traffic. While your running as a pirmary your supporting network traffic and this can be up to about 30K up and down. Yours is lower then that and looks completely normal.

As you see when you change to secondary it stops (the orange). If you want more details about what the Bandwidth graph means have a look here

As for your irratic speeds I balme your ISP. Sky is one of the worst about throttling your P2P traffic and we have many Sky users that complian about poor perfrance while using WinMX and on Sky. I would suggest you go back to secondary as it wont use as much Bandwidth and your likely (with Sky as the ISP) to have better luck.

Just wondering does Sky throttle bandwidth to stop people using P2P programs? And will it be in my contract somewhere that they do this? As from day one I've regreted changing to there service as I dont even get near the speed they say I'm getting. If its not in my contract surely I'd be able to cancel my contract(12 months).

I'm not sure if its in the contract or not.

Basically the issues they have with p2p use is the bandwidth such applications use. They could care less really that your trading files but that it takes alot of the bandwidth and they claim that this activity hurts or diminishes other users bandwidth and speeds on the ISP. So basically most ISP's do have a fair use policy that discusses the use of P2P or more sepcifically the high bandwidth use customers.

Now.. the good thing is that most of the ISPs that have you throttled would rather you go to another ISP then fight with them about using bandwidth.. so.. you 'might' be able to get out of the contract simply because they would rather not have a high use person anyway.. .. i use that term might very loosely as I dont want to give you false hopes.. but its worth calling them and finding out thier exact policies.. discussing the fact that your not getting the speeds you are contracted for.. and how everyone might be happier if you were released from your contract to look for another ISP.

Thank you, I think I will give them a call, its worth a try!! I never had any hassle with VirginMedia so I can go back to them. Pity there so much more expensive. There's truth in that saying "you get what you pay for" :p

btw, you should read contracts before signing them

on the packages with monthly usage limits their "unfair usage policy" doesn't apply

on the so-called "unlimited" package their "unfair usage policy" states that if you repeatedly make "excessive" use of bandwidth intensive applications then they will send you written notices, and after a minimum of 3 notices and a "reasonable period of time" if you still make "excessive" use of the bandwidth then they can either move you to a different (limited) package, charge for the excess bandwidth, suspend your service, cancel your service, or place you on the same shared connection as other users using "excessive" bandwidth so that your shared bandwidth is with other heavy users rather than light users... nowhere are they allowed to throttle p2p

if you do have any trouble cancelling, swear at them, section 11g2 - inappropriate behaviour towards their staff

(i bet their staff just love the fact that some customers have to swear at them to get cancelled... lol)
