Sony Admits To Another DRM Fiasco On Their DVD,s

Yes folks you guessed it, yet another case of unecessary DRM impacting on the consumer, why dont these anti consumer morons get the message  :?

Sony has said that it will replace a number of DVDs that caused problems for many of its customers. 20 DVD titles were affected by the glitch—including the movies Casino Royal, Rocky Balboa, and Stranger Than Fiction—which was caused by Sony's ARccOS copy protection on the discs.

ARccOS is a secondary level of DRM on Sony's DVDs, used in conjunction with another form of copy protection, the well-known Content Scramble System (CSS). ARccOS intentionally introduces errors to certain sectors of the DVD so that ripping software that reads the disc sequentially will generate errors in the ripped product. Most set-top DVD players can read instructions on the disc to skip over these intentional errors, though, which then produces the expected video output for most users.
Although the company has been using ARccOS on its DVDs for some time now, a recent update to the copy protection scheme caused the DVDs to be incompatible with what Sony describes as "a very small number" of DVD players.

I thankfully have not broken my vow never to purchase any offerings from those companies that either attempt to rip off/mislead the consumer or sponsor attacks on p2p networks, situations like this will I hope become more common, then perhaps the amount of their customers willing to act will become an avalanche they ignore at their peril.

no, they won't ignore them, they will just lie as usual

if 90% of their customers said they are pissed off with the DRM and refuse to buy any more DVDs, we'd see announcements about how p2p has caused them a 95% drop in revenue (i'm sure even with a figure like 90% they'd still have to exaggerate their losses, they wouldn't feel right publishing correct figures)

Im happy and lucky to say ive not bought any thing with Sony on it or owned by sony in over 2 years. I hope ill be able to keep it up. I know ill never be able to hurt sony by just me not buying from them but you do what you can do.I had to think long and hard on buying a used PS2 and 25 games for $70.00 us i did give in i needed a back up and a few of his games. But sony will never see that money. Sony will lie before doing the right thing. I agree with km if any drop in sales is seen it will be said that P2p is the reason.Just like Jack Tompson does about any shooting in real life ,its becouse of gameing. They just dont get the real truth.People like to use what they pay for any way they like and as far as Jack goes some people are crazy and games didnt cause it.
Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
