AVI Files Have no picture and/or no sound
« on: April 22, 2007, 08:35:34 pm »
I have downloaded three films.  Each Film is an AVI file.  I am runnig on Windows Vista,  I m not sure that is relevant.  When I try to play file the screen is black and I don't hear any sound.

I want to use Windows Media Center to watch the films.  Because I can stream them to my television screen.  But I'm not sure that I need to do anything else!!!

I've only downloaded the films and tried to play them.  I'm not receiving any error messages.   Are these bogus films? and I need to dowload another film or can I fix these files with sopmething else sso that I may play on wedias Media Player   ;)

you will likely need to install the correct codecs

there are various codec packs about that contain all of the commonly used codecs to let you watch 99% of the videos online, although the compatibility of various codecs with vista could be an issue

when I tested vista I didn't have any major problems with the klite codec pack (although the other 2 i tried to use first caused me major hassle) so that would be the first i'd suggest trying

http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm

the basic one should be enough for the majority of videos, but the full one contains more codecs so has the best chances of playing the most videos, it also has the best chance of something not working well with vista though, so it's up to you which you go for

You can use this player: www.videolan.org, it has all the codecs it needs inbuilt. It plays all, (I've never heard domeone say, "but it does not play this extention") Clean and easy to install and small and fast...

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

assuming it worked on vista, and assuming that someone had asked for a different player instead of the actual question of how to get it working on windows media center...

it has no benefits over installing a codec pack, but does have disadvantage in forcing you to use a very basic player when you already have better players installed

VLC (Video Lan) is a great program and i would recommend it above all other media players. It contains no virus and is very easy to use.

it also doesn't work on vista, and doesn't have anything to do with the original question of getting videos to play in media center
