Ok folks we have a big problem WinMxGroup.Com  has been taken offline and so unfortunately you,ll need a host file to connect for now, this is expected to be only a temporary solution until the situation is more stable and we can get something better rolling.

Either of these files must be installed (remember to unzip  ) in the following Folder Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc \    this is For windows XP , be sure to make a backup of the old hostfile first in case of a problem.

For Linux users:  the hosts file is located in  /etc

You will need root access to change it, and please make sure to get a backup copy!

We have thanks to Rik also got a program that will auto upload the hosts file to the correct location if your using some verson of Win2k/all version of XP/Vista


Autochanger updated:  This one will find your hosts file so will work with any Windows Operating systems to replace the temporary fix

For those of you that are running on primary connection it is vital that you follow these instructions:

For now we have no blocking of the flooders in place and there for they can take up all your Secondary (S=) slots and leave no room for real users.  Until we have a permanent solution please follow the above instructions to ensure your primary is hosting real users and not the RIAA.

the problem we are having right now is our main user who was providing the server lists withdrew from the game, other will rise to the challenge and all will be right in the world again soon

Update: as of some time last night the caches addressed by the temp hosts file appear to be offline, until a decent solution using dns appears I would personally suggest anyone having connection issues who has used this either replaces their hosts file with this one:

Download the file to your desktop, Unzip it and run the WinMX Fix.exe file and restart your WinMX.  Be sure your WinMX is off when you do this.

For older systems such as 98 or 95 please reboot your PC after you do this and then restart WinMX

Install instructions:

Please only do this temporary fix if you're currently NOT connecting, there will be a more permanent fix out soon - hopefully...

   For all this to work the OLD Patch from winmxgroup needs to be still installed!!!
   If you don't have it anymore you can get it here, just run the installer BEFORE doing the next steps

1. Download the file winmxfix(windows).zip
    from one of the mirrors on http:  //www.winmxworld.com/update.htm or one of the links in the post above this.
 
2. Go to the downloaded file and unzip it
    XP and above can do it natively, earlier systems might have to have WinZip installed (the evaluation version will do)
    Choose a folder like C:\winmxfix to extract the files to (can be any folder of course, just make sure you can find it again)

3. Open Explorer and find the folder you extracted the files to (C:\winmxfix)
    Open the folder and make sure there are two files in it:   WinMxFix(Windows).exe  and  hosts

4. Run the installer
    Make sure WinMx is closed down and double-click on WinMxFix(Windows).exe
    You should see the following:

   

    Just click on "Patch!" and you're done!

5. Restart Winmx

If the above installer does NOT work for you (because vista, xp or some other protection keeps the installer from replacing the hosts file)
or if you want to modify your hosts file manually do the following:

Follow steps 1. to 3. as above.

4.  Find your current hosts file
     For XP it's in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\ for other systems best use the FIND function in explorer to locate it.
     Make a backup (!!!!) of that file once you've located it. Copy it to a location you can find it again !!!
     
5.  Open the ORIGINAL Hosts file (the one from C:\windows\System32\Drivers\Etc or the appropriate location for your system).
     Open Notepad, then open the hosts file in it. (File > Open...> browse to the right location)
     (You may have to set it to open all files not only those with .txt endings)

6.  Open the NEW Hosts file (the one from C:\winmxfix or wherever you put it)
     Go to Edit > Select all. Once all files are selected go to Edit > copy  (Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C works as well of course)

7.  Add the copied entries to your ORIGINAL hosts file
     Go back to the Notepad with the ORIGINAL hosts file open.
     Go to Edit > Paste  (Ctrl+V) and copy over the selected entries from the other hosts file.

8.  Save the modified ORIGINAL hosts file.

9.  You're done in most cases, but some system might require you to flush your DNS cache.
     For that go to your START button. Click on Run... . type in cmd
     In the DOS box that appears now type in ipconfig /flushdns
     Alternatively you can also just reboot the system.

10. That's it, run WinMx!
