Searching More Primaries
« on: September 13, 2007, 11:26:01 am »
If a Search query searches only 8 Primary Connections, is it possible to expand the Search to cover more Primaries? This would be helpful in locating hard to find files.

Hi Trestor

You can do this by changing how primaries you have allowed. Go into settings and go to winmx peer network. You will see a drop down menu with different allocations of bandwidth... Use this drop down menu with Kbs/out and 10.5kbs/in to connect to more primaries go higher than what you have currently.

However connecting to more primaries you are also connecting to more secondaries making it easier to find files.

I hope this has helped please us know how you go.

Thank you for that, ST. I don't know how much is too much, so I selected 12 kB Out and 18 In; is this a good idea? I want to both make my files more findable for other people, and have greater success in finding rare files myself.

Hi Trestor

You can adjust it back and forth as you need to. This is what I usually do depending on the file I am looking for and how rare it is.

Your very welcome.

I'm having trouble searching for obscure files, as well.  Following s_toad's suggestion to broaden horizons by increasing #KB/s in and #KB/s out does not appear to remedy the #s of files yielded in Search results.  I don't want to change settings that might limit Search results further.  In addition, I don't want changing settings to negatively affect uploads.

1) How does increasing KBs/in allow one to search more primaries?  (Please understand I have no desire to pursue a career in computer science, so kindley follow the KISS theory.)

2) Should the box for "Allow primary connection with CPU under 266MHz" be ticked, as well?  If so, what is the expected result?

Hmm I see I have arrived rather late in the day to clear up a misconception that seems to be occuring here  :?

Primary searches are not just sent to 8 primaries they are send 8 hops so your searches will be more like 8x8x8x8x8x8x8x8 , this is rather more than adequate.

As we used to tell folks some time ago, first identify a particular file you wish and conduct a file "hash" search for further sources, the hash search is global and will indeed scour the entire network for a match.

Heres how to do all of the above

https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/hash_numbers.html

I hope that is of help and sorry for not spotting this mis-communication earlier.

PS: Dont make any adjustments to your setup  :)

Ghostship, I didn't change any settings, other than increase #KBs in/out, as such appears harmless.  Unaware of limits (in multiples of 8?) to primary connections, I understand logic re: 8x nth; and, the tutorial about hash numbers is mind-boggling.  Did some poor soul actually assign/program codes for each potential file's validity?  OMG.

Recall, I have no hankering in pursuing a career in computer science, so please follow the KISS theory (i.e., keep it simple sweetheart -- poor thang don't know jack about machinery, is a dingbat, etc.)

Thus, in getting back to earlier queries,
1) How does increasing KBs/in allow one to search more primaries?
2) Should the box for "Allow primary connection with CPU under 266MHz" be ticked, as well?  If so, what is the expected result?

Yes indeedy, ignorance is bliss; others should try it...

lol... i just love you Bluepup.. i still have an email i owe you a reply to aswell.. havnt forgot that either..

Apprentice = number of posts yes (we do assume your learning something here.. lol)

1) How does increasing KBs/in allow one to search more primaries?
What Ghost is saying is that its such a small amout of added search results for resources used its not advisable.

2) Should the box for "Allow primary connection with CPU under 266MHz" be ticked, as well?  If so, what is the expected result?
no, that is to allow slow speed processors to run as primary, its not only not recommended it would be rather selfish and silly to do.  When you run as a primary client you are supporting other users aka Secondary clients and that will cause all of you to suffer basically with slow unstable speeds.

Gotcha!  For those of us with limited vocabularies (e.g., poor bluepup), plain old prose works every time.

Well, then, fiddle dee dee, I simply won't worry my little head with that hash stuff right now; and, I just wouldn't even think of ticking a silly "Allow primary connection with CPU..." box.  However, I shall continue praying that someone tracks down our troubled OCD brother/sister that is assigning hash codes to all those files and convinces him/her to resume medication.

Me Here, you done good -- again!

While passing through I saw there were more posts after I signed out on this thread, so I thought I'd update. I didn't find that changing the In/Out speed made any noticeable difference, as said Bluepup also. Today my MX had another hiccup (as it does every couple of weeks) and lost most of my settings and demanded to know my country, speed, queue numbers, etc, etc, all over again. It also set my In/Out speed at the slowest, 7 kB Out and 10.5 In. I've upped the ante to 10 Out and 15 In; I don't know what difference it shall make though. I'll look at that hash thingy when I have to concentration to try and absorb it. Cheers. :)

lol
Ok let me see if I can make 'that hash' thingie more understandable.  There are many programs out there and bits of code that can make a file ID number.  And Its built into WinMX to do so.  It runs flawlessly and no one is suffereing the number crunching to do it, so no animals or humans were harmed in the making of your hash numbers ok.  How this is done is not the important part and I wouldnt cloud myself with that...

Now, have you ever wondered how WinMX knows if a file you searched for has 5 ppl with the same file or 1 person with the same file?  What makes them the 'same' file?  What allows you to get the 'same' file from more then one person?  Even when the file names are different some how, WinMX knows they are the same?

Thats the hash, its not evil or hard, its wonderful.  It is what allows you to multisource download, in other words get more results of a file that match ones you have and allow you to get files faster.  WinMX automatically generates a file ID (Hash) based on a system that is widely used in other words the system in use is not unique to just getting WinMX files an ID.

So now you are asking yourself so what?  Well if the fact that this allows you to get one file from several users at one time doesnt excite you enough, let me tell you something else about Hash system.  WinMX uses it when you click 'find sources' and its nearly a global search, as far as I am aware.  This means that as discussed earlier about increasing the possible primaries to search (not likely to help you any at all) searching via the hash id is very likely to find you more sources that you wouldnt see in a regular search.  Its a much wider search!!

This means that once you find that rare treat you have searched for for days via the reglar search window, that if you highlight it in the trnasfers screen and click on the 'Find Sources Now' button its going to use the HASH> ID and look much farther then your little WinMX could by word searching.  Any time i am trying to get a file I do this and it often works great, finding me many more wonderful ppl out there in the world that have the 'same' file as myself.

You can also do this by 'right click the file name in the transfers screen' and choose 'Search for Alternatives'  This is also a Hash Search, which again means its only going to find files that match the one you want!!
Loverly isnt it ?

Now I must admit that when searching for rare files or hard to find files this 'increase in delight' is not as profound as with some more popular titles however, you cant deny that every little help ...well.. helps..

Hope this clears up the mysterious Hash id and how it can make your life on WinMX more enjoyable, if not post back I'll try to explain.. lol

Shucks, all this time I thought finding files had to do with those carefully chosen, albeit brilliant, words I'm typing in for search titles.  (I told you I don't know jack.)  In addition to increasing awareness of life's delightfulness, you have greatly reduced personal anxiety re: an unmedicated OCD, somewhere out there relentlessly coding files.  Guess it's safe to remove hash coding tangential events from my prayer list, as the concept really has been a burden.

It is unlikely that I have use for such information, but I'll ask out of curiosity, anyway.  Are hash numbers automatically generated by titles, authors, words w/in files, dates, lengths of files, and so on?  If so, would typing fewer words into searches yeild more results?  Does using fewer "search" words yeild more results, but increased results are less refined?  Is it possible to search for files that "do not contain" certain words, say by using a "-" (negative sign) in front of words that should be eleminated in the search?

Im so glad that you are free of your anxiety over the demonic repetition that would be the OCD HASHer Maker dudes.

And actually your right 'finding the files' has everything to do with those albeit brilliant words your using, its got to have a place to start.  The following is about finding more sources for those same files.

Erm... frankly Im not sure there is a layman's way to explain this but lets just say that your mp3 is made up of bytes yes?  Little bits of data.  Those bytes are then taken by this program or bit of code (as within WinMX) and a smaller easier to keep track of ID is created (like a file fingerprint) that in theory if the same bit of code was used in another program and same file bytes would come up with the same ID number for.  The reason I mention this is there are tools available in the archive that will get you HASH id numbers exactly like WinMX will but run as stand alone.

So this is like a fingerprint and yes it can be said then that if you take a file, and change its characteristics (not names, titles, id3 tags, but actual properties of the file) then you will cause it to have a new ID number.  For example if i re encode that mp3 from 128bitrate to say 192bitrate i have changed its properties and it will get a new HASH when I re share it on WinMX.  If i rename it, or re do the ID3 tags Ive not really changed the file itself only the description of the file.

Now as for searches, there are ways to refine your searches.  We have a small section on the site i'll give you the link for shortly that will explain those.

As Trestor asked in another thread you can also find in searches titles that have nothing to do with the 'keywords' you searched but if you click on 'Show Full Path' button then find that low and behold those keywords show up in the path.  Once you begin to understand things better all this seemingly useless knowledge can be helpful when refining or searching rare files.

https://forum.winmxworld.com/index.php?topic=83.0.html                   << Refine Search results

I hope this is understandable to you hun and as usual if not.. post back :>

(I told you I don't know jack.)

It appears we have something in common. I don't know Jack either; in fact, I've never met him. I do not know if the experience would be pleasurable if I did, although I can hope it would be.

Of course, I am being completely Frank in telling you this, but I can be Ernest if you like. :)

Hi Trestor and Bluepup

I like your post Trestor and had a lil giggle. Don't mean to offend you thou.

It is sooo true. Here I will tell you guys a lil experience of myself and this is in just over 3 years. I was petrified of going into rooms and learning more.

However of those 3 years I have read, learnt and also experienced many problems which everyone has had.

All it is time and patience. The tutorial section is great way to understand more and you are both welcome to come and have a chat in winmxworld.com help room. We are all available to answer questions through the forum and the help room. So please drop by some time and come and have a chat.

Lordy, Trestor.  Best that both of us beware the wind...  lest, all that liquid we're contributing blows back to hit us in the face or ruins our favorite lucky bowling shirts...

I have more poor thang/dk jack questions about increasing primaries, as connections relate to open nap.

1)  Once connected to an 'open nap' server, how long does one remain connected?

2)  Does connecting to one 'open nap' server automatically connect to all its 'active' sub users?  If not, should each sub user be 'imported'?

3)  Will someone explain 'export' feature of open nap?  I gather that 'export' indicates additional users files are shared via the export, but I'm not sure.

Hi silicon_toad2000

What makes you think that folks don't read tutorials looking for info, such as 'searching more primaries', before forum query?  Perhaps I'm thicker than molasses in January, but some of the tutorials are difficult for me to follow.  Uncanny, indeed, yet I sense that I might not have the market on 'thick' cornered re: tutorials.  What would happen if writers assume that all readers are completely ignorant (like me)?

Do you think it would be helpful if writers run a 'readability' (there is one in MS Word) check before placing text/info in tutorials?  In addition, when appealing to the general public, keeping text at 3rd or 4th grade reading levels is desirable -- most newspapers do this.
