Lopster Uploads
« on: September 28, 2007, 03:24:26 pm »
I have noticed that quite a few repeat Uploads are from people who are using Lopster, which I gather is another p2p file sharing program, and uses the same Opennap servers as WinMX. I guess there is a basic bug between the two progs, which may be causing these repeat uploads. So far I've put people on Ignore, but if I can get them to stop then I can then share with them again.

Is there some setting on Lopster that I can Message them about that they should change? Can they even receive messages from MX? I can't tell.

Trestor,

I think WinMX is about sharing.  Isn't it?  What stops you from sharing 'again' with repeat uploaders by simply removing them from your 'ignore' list?  Perhaps, when folks notice multiple identical files piling up in their libraries, they will stop repeatedly downloading those files; and, if they don't, what the heck?  That way, you won't have to police uploads or worry that others might end up with too many events of downloading identical files.  It's just a thought...

Bluepup,

I understand the thrust of your argument and I don't necessarily disagree with it, but let me explain why I keep asking about repeat uploads in these threads, trying to find answers.

First, I come from a position of considerable ignorance about the finer details of how MX works, so unless I stumble across something in a thread or a tutorial, the only way I can find a solution is to ask. For all I knew someone might have had a solution to the repeat upload situation. I used to have a problem with repeats on the Opennap because I had the sub-folders shared, but I have corrected that now because of advice I received here.

Second, I have two kinds of problems with repeat uploads: one is with at least one person who has fixated on my files for some obscure reason, and is always targeting the same file many times day after day, and even changes his user name slightly and comes back when I put him in the Ignore list. This person is a serial pest, but there's not much I can do except unshare the specific files, which means everyone misses out.

However, the other kind of repeat uploader may not even know that repeats are happening, because I suspect some sort of bug in either MX or Lopster, and this was the subject of this thread.

Bear in mind that I am trying to find a way to allow people OFF my Ignore list, not put them on. I have no objection to sharing; in fact, this is the reason that I am on MX at all, because I download almost nothing myself but I share over 3000 files. I want people to upload my files and I am not happy about excluding anyone from doing so. However, I do feel obliged to put some people on Ignore.

The reason for this, and why I don't just have a free-for-all upload policy, is because people who Upload the same file many times over do lengthen the queue for other uploaders, slowing the process for them, especially if the same file is queued a dozen times by one person. These repeat uploads also cause a drain on valuable bandwidth that I, or uploaders, could use to speed things up. I can't watch MX all the time to keep things going smoothly, so if the problem could have been fixed, then I would have had only one kind of annoying pest on Ignore and everyone else would have been free to upload from me again.

In short, I don't know WHY these repeats happen, but I asked about Lopster because some people I've put in the Ignore list seem to be using it. If the problem could have been fixed then everyone would have come out ahead.

So yes, I could share with everyone and wear the consequences as you have suggested, but I would have been happier if the basic problem could have been solved, so I thought it was worth asking.

I hope this goes some way in explaining where I am coming from. Cheers.  :D :D

Do what you have to do.  Just a thought, here, Trestor.  While watching uploads, how about, once you see an upload is successfully running from one user, and it appears that additional transfers of identical files from that user could usurp the bandwidth, simply cancel that user's repeat uploads?  Perhaps, send them a message?  (We need to remember that some fear that receiving messages will place their computers' security in jeopardy.)

...and yes, directives in some tutorials & forums appear to be s/w conflicting.

Bluepup, its strange to me to read in more than one thread an underlying theme you seem fixed on, you make a generalisation about forums and tutorials not being identical and idiot proof when its clear one is suggested best practice and the other is based on users observations, of course you could do something useful for the community and point out any conflict of practice showing reference links and allow us to remedy the matter or go on complaining, its your choice.

Trestor,
Lopster is the only windows multisource opennap client. Multisource means you can download files from more than one user at a time[like winmx]. Lopster is a good thing but when you are logged into more than one server it sees you as different users and queues the file from the same user on each server. So its other lopster users who are bogging up your queue  :?
