A New Monopoly On The Horizon ?

In what sounds like a dangerous move we heard this announcement today

Microsoft and Yahoo IM networks became one in 2006 and now the much-bandied-about rumour that Bill and the Boyz were after Yahoo appears to have become hard reality. Or with Bill Gates’ retirement imminent, that should now perhaps be Steve and the Boyz.

Either way, a monopoly of monopolies is on the horizon with Yahoo shares up 60% in pre-market trading to US$30.50, “after Microsoft Corp. made an unsolicited US$44.6-billion offer for the seminal Web portal,” says The National Post, going on:
“Yahoo has yet to respond to the offer, while Microsoft said the tie-up would create a ‘competitive alternative’.”
The tie-up, if it goes through, would of course do the exact opposite.

I dont know about you folks but I think its not good for competition or microsoft in general to go buying up every rival on the block, I see bad news ahead if this goes through.

Depends on your definition of illegal cobra.... microsoft seem to be a law unto themselves these days
A good choice for microsoft as yahoo is as full of bloat/spyware/advertising as vista is.... wont be long before people buying a vista o/s will need a wheelbarrow to take it home from the store.

My understanding is Yahoo already agreed to the deal. At least as I heard it on the radio the other morning. MS already owned the second most popular chat messaging software. Now they'll own the most popular. Probably both wil be united into one. It can't be called a monopoly however because my understanding is there is still AIM messaging and Trillion which unifies all of them anyway. So they haven't broken any laws as of yet but Microsoft's motto has always seemed to have been "If you can't beatum honest or dishonest just buyum and get it done with!".

pidgin http://www.pidgin.im/ is a whole lot better/faster and a lot less bloated than trillian (supports more IM services too) and on top of that is open source so you dont have to 'register' it to get any additional features... (shareware is an obsolete concept)

btw, trillian is a client... not a service... so it doesnt really count as competing with anyone in that department....
