Linux Emulator ?
« on: February 23, 2008, 03:02:40 am »
This grabbed my attention folks as a sensible way to introduce windows users to free Linux programs and tools

Quote
Today I'll show you how to seamlessly run your favorite Linux applications directly in Windows with a free software called andLinux.
What Is andLinux?
andLinux is actually a full installation of Ubuntu Linux running on top of your Windows operating system. Similar to how you can run coherence mode in Parallels or unity mode in VMWare Fusion, andLinux takes your Linux apps out of the virtual machine and creates a seamless interface in which they co-mingle with all your Windows apps.
AndLinux works with Windows 2000, XP, 2003, and Vista (32-bit only), so if you're running one of those versions of Windows, head over to the andLinux download page, andLinux comes in two flavors: the minimal XFCE version (143MB) and the full KDE version (665MB); for this guide, I'll be using the full KDE version.

You can get the release here

http://www.andlinux.org/downloads.php

This has my interest folks and I,m a long term windows users so it must be good news for folks like me to be able at last to sample the delights of penguinware  :D

ok I'm downloading this thing. There's apparently a miniversion or a minimal install and a full type version so I'm getting them both. Have you tried it yet and if so what do you think of it?

i went to download it, then read about the place that it was still abit unstable. So id soon hold off and wait till the forums arent active with bug reports. If it wasnt a system i needed on 24/7 though i would give it a try myself.

Ok I install the thing right. Set it up. Couldn't get passed the login. Would let me type my login name but when it went for the password it wouldn't let me type it in. So I'll tamper with it some more and just kind of post it up how it goes.

LMAO... in linux as you are typing your password it looks like you arent typing anything (as apposed to the printing of asteriscs(sp?!) which adds an additional layer of security considering somone snooping in wont even know how -long- your password is...)

just type the password (blind) and hit enter...

ok so why won't the user and pass work? I put in the exact same as during setup when it asks for a user and pass.  :?

login as root (if you have the password for root) then type 'passwd <username>' where <username> is the one you cant login to... it will prompt you to set a new password...

...this is assuming this emulator works like the real thing...

passwords and usernames are case sensitive so to make things easy keep it all lowercase with no punctuation or other special chars in the username/pass (just numbers/letters)
