Virus warning when opening Winmx
« on: May 27, 2008, 08:01:44 am »
I've been using this program for the last 5 years without any problems, until today.  When I went to start up Winmx, my virus scanner it detected a virus.  I'm using Advast Virus scan.  So I placed the virus in my chest folder.  But moving that virus stops Winmx from starting.  So I thought I'd uninstall Winmx and download a fresh copy.  I downloaded 3.0mod3-3.54 Setup.exe.  Before installing this program, I shut down Advast and installed Winmx.  I turned on my Avast and it detects the same virus when I try to run Winmx.
The virus is found in C:\Program Files\Winmx\oledlg.dll
It says it's a Win32:Trojan-gen

Can some please tell me how I can get around this?

The normal procedure to address this problem is firstly to identify the file involved (as you have done) and secondly to bring this to the attention of the anti virus vendor concerned as its likely affecting many other folks, if in a day or two the problem still remains then its likley you should be looking for a new AV solution as dealing with false positives is something any repuatble AV solution supplier takes seriously.

Just to be on the safe side ensure your patch came from the correct site and matches the hash provided, if not then dump it and reinstall the patch from here.

first AVG, and now Avast picking up false positives, are free vendors trying thier best to wreck thier products at the mo, im just in the process of installing avast anyhow to confirm this.

**Edit** Can confirm avast is reporting this as a trogen, time to email them and get this sorted folks as we did with AVG. Damn disgracefull practice.

Ok, to load your winmx, double click the avast icon in your taskbar, in the bar on the left scroll down to standard shield and click on it, on the right hand side choose terminate. Load winmx and then click start again. It doesnt appear to affect it once its running. Not perfect but will do while a few of us get emailing

Hi Deux,

Thanks for that bit of info on clicking the avast icon and terminating the standard shield.  I did what you said and it appears to work.

And to confirm that it is a Trojan, I went to my virus chest and it says it's a trojan.

I have also let Advast know about this little problem.  So until they fix it I'll just have to keep running Winmx the way you stated.

How will I know that the problem has been fixed by Advast?

Cause if I try to run Winmx without terminating the standard shield, it stops Winmx from running and I have to install it again.

Can I suggest a quick fix for now is keeping a zip file of your winmx folder containing winmx.exe + the Settings dat and Lib4.dat files, this way you can swiftly unzip the files again without having to reinstall, although to be fair installation time is minimal.

As to how long Avast will take to remedy this problem, unfortunately no one knows the answer to this but they have done this before and took some days to fix it, this is why contacting them is important as the more folks complain, the higher the priority to resolve the false positive.

Problem has been fixed!!
Thank you all for your help, it was most helpful.  Avast have finally fixed the problem.  It no longer detects the .dll file as a Trojan.
