I managed to fix his machine by removing this malware but the solution to infection is simple,

Ensuring you have an antivirus solution installed is the smartest thing to do and keep it updated, do regular sweeps with spybot/adaware and most importantly in this case dont be in a hurry to click "ok" "accept" or any other of the ones you head for when your impatient or busy, and take a few minutes to actually read what your downloading, maybe even set up a system restore point before doing anything, the alternative is it to find yourself offline or worse bereft of important or private data, stay alert, stay safe !
