« on: September 29, 2008, 03:14:38 am »
I have made the misstake of trying the new community patch only to find it is worse than it ever has been. Can I still get the smaller dll that this useless thing has replaced ?

Hi Milbot

What has happened with the new patch? Could you please tell us what you have found and we might be able to give possible solutions for it.

What many may not be aware of is that this particular patch was being tested by approximately 50+ users many months prior to release any "major scale" problems would have been spotted very early on and resolved.

Most of the folks are aware of the dropping issue with mx and having investigated folks concerns months ago we where able to assertain they where based purely on two factors, the flooding disruption and the dll preference system, in the flooding case  it stands to reason if a primary is being bombarded with thousands of fake query results  its going to affect its ability to service its socket traffic, and in the case of the old dll it refuses connections to anything except other dll users, this is one of the core reasons we wanted a clean sweep of the network to remove host and old dll files, it seems we have still more work to do but fixing the network long term is the issue for me and was one of the key objectives the community patch project was targeted to do, we have to urge folks to upgrade and in the mean while be patient.

i have the upnp feature disabled  maybe people who feel they are falling from rooms since installing the new patch have this enabled and are using a router and thats their problem as the upnp is set on a timer ?

One big issue i have come across alot of lately is people on routers need to take a little more time to look at there router configs
In the past week i have found no fewer then 6 people having issues with droping all connections dl's ul's and falling from a room
When i have stepped in to help them out after doing all the standard checks i have then asked them to check there router lease time
Now what i have been finding is alot of new routers are coming set @    00:00 start lease and 00:00 end lease
What this means is every 24 hours your isp will reset your connection by default as the lease is set to run at a max 24 hours.
Now some routers will allow you to disable this feture some will allow you to set it to 7 days instead one 1
Alot wont allow you to change the lease time at all and i am affraid to say people (including myself) are going to be dropping connection every 24 hours
So to anyone with connection issues as in loseing all connection take a little time to look on the internet for your make of router and the model of your router and then do some research of the lease rules for your router.
I susspect that this may just be a issue for alot of people who didnt even know it was.
Not that i am saying this is the issue here   its just a thought
I am starting to compile a list of routers that i come across with this lease issue and will post back when i feel i have most of them, with any (if any fixes) i can find for them.

What I have been advising folks with routers that dont play ball is to disable upnp ( by making enable uPNP =0) in the oledlg INI file and do a normal router setup, this wont fix an ISP reset of course but it will ensure folks wont have any problems related to using UPNP on their particular device.

I have found the opposite.   I used to drop from rooms and now I don't with new patch.

Lease time.
Now there is something I completely forgot even existed.
Years ago after trying one router brand after another and several trips back to Frys to return them I went with a simple switch instead of a router.
Smaller, cheaper, better. And a switch has no idea what lease time is.
Now im on DSL. I don't know if the actiontec modem (I know... eww) has a lease time or not. But it doesn't do resets when it feels like it the way most routers seem to like to do. The switch is also more stable in that one local pc transmitting data too quickly doesn't 'crash' the router. That was another problem I had with any and all routers.
Now its hooked up as so:
local pcs >> switch, switch >> modem.
The only time this network setup crashes, resets, or drops the main connection (even for a split second) is if a thunderstorm or wayward contruction worker cuts off the power to it.
The modem is Linux under the hood, so I forwarded the needed ports using iptables rules by going in using hyperterminal. It has a web interface too but that is incomplete at best, not many things that you can tweak that way.
I see no difference in peeps dropping from rooms though since the patch. They drop and re-enter at random as always. No sudden large numbers drop at once, unless a storm is in the wrong part of town.

Birdman its not possible for the patch to be causing the downloads not to work in any way that I'm aware of.  Downloads dont require ports to work on both ends even so it wont be about routers either.
So because guessing about three users that I have basically 0 details about is impossible.  Let me suggest we take these case by case and you have them come and post details.

I'll need to know the basics as well as some more detailed information in order  to help them solve this issue.

What Operating system do they use and Service packs if applicable?
What versions of WinMX?
Exactly when this started, (and any changes to any hardware or software from the same time).
Do they use secondary or Primary on MX?
What firewalls or antivirus do they use?
Have they tested with known working users and samplings from searches?
Do all downloads fail or only some?
Any third party applications including but not limited to Moni, Leechhammer, Peerguardian etc...?
Who are the ISP's and what are they (DSL, Cable, Dial up)?

If any of them are using Carphone Warehouse as an ISP you can stop right there, we've been seeing at least two people a day in the help rooms with that same problem, many of which uploads seem ok, but downloads are nearly impossible to get started.   This is the ISP and nothing besides voting with your wallet will fix this for those users :(
Carphone have implemented AOL's old throttling system and its worse then dial up and they should be avoided as an ISP at all costs if you use WinMX.

As I said its really important to take this on an indivisdual case by case basis and work out issues, because it wont be patch related.

It would be nice if we had some info to work with here rather than hearing you again claim that the patch is the cause of not only your own but other peoples troubles now, when its clear that the majority of users are not reporting such issues  :/

Please provide the information asked for.

Hi «]¥[¹» Pë©khämïtë, try closing WinMX and remove WinMX from the list of programs in your ZoneAlarm Firewall. Restart WinMX , ZA should ask if you want to allow permission....allow all when asked.

If this doesnt help post back and somebody will get you sorted out
