The Search Function
« on: February 17, 2009, 07:37:05 pm »
I don't know which would be the right part of the forum to post this, so an apology if this is the wrong place.

I have trouble at times when I want to use the Search function at this forum. For example, I wanted to find the thread about Windows 7, but the Search told me that each word in the search must have at least two letters. Similar has happened several times in the past. So is this restriction necessary, and can it be removed? Thanks.

Hi Trestor

Try typing in just windows. This has worked for me and has brought up some great search results on windows 7.

This is true enough, and using a single word is what I did, in the end. It worked for this specific subject (after sorting through many threads to find the one I wanted), but my point is that the at-least-two-letter limitation is something of a nuisance to the user, and there are some subjects that might give too many returns from using just a single word. The real questions are whether the limitation serves any useful purpose, and can it be removed? Thanks.

The reason why it doesnt let you search for one letter is quite simple. Its due to the how it polls the mysql and one letter searchs would yield every single post in the data base.

Speaking of a search function, maybe an idea for the site would be to integrate a search throughout all of the website? Like have a search bar near the top or something that searches all the tutorials and the forum.

That makes sense, and I should have thought of that point myself. Thanks.

Google already indexes the site for its own search function purposes.

In the Google search bar, type in whatever you want to search for and follow it with site:forum.winmxworld.com (or site:www.winmxworld.com for the main site and not the forum).

(such as "Windows 7" site:forum.winmxworld.com)

and it will search, at least up to the extent in which it last crawled the forum, which is usually done once every day or three.
Downloading is an addiction I do not want to give up.

Michael you have just been unbanned today to turn over a new leaf on the forum, insulting posters and general lamery are not acceptable and most certainly not when you know better  :x

No more of this please, if you cannot add rather than detract from the forum then please stay away as I for one am too busy to waste time on unecessary drama.
