Just minutes ago the verdict in the case of The Pirate Bay Four was announced. All four defendants were accused of ‘assisting in making copyright content available’. Peter Sunde: Guilty. Fredrik Neij: Guilty. Gottfrid Svartholm: Guilty. Carl Lundström: Guilty. The four receive 1 year in jail each and fines totaling $3,620,000.

Thats the dumbest ruling i have ever heard, but not a surprising one, ding ding round 2 on its way soon with the appeals. Reading the decision in detail i suspect search engines the world over could be dragged into this also.

I suspect more then search engines, what about the people who created the internet, ISPs , Network adapter manufacturers and the people that designed them. Hell with that verdict even the operating system vendors and pc manufacturers who sell all of the above could be sued.

* Silver Stripes looks at the record button on his VCR

does that fit into the same category as well? ... it assists in infringing copyright after all...

The broader legal consequence of the Court's decision was its establishment of a general test for determining whether a device with copying or recording capabilities ran afoul of copyright law. This test has created some interpretative challenges to courts in applying the case to more recent file sharing technologies available for use on home computers and over the Internet.

I'm not surprised by the verdict.

I don't like it, but I'm not suprised in the least.
Downloading is an addiction I do not want to give up.

I don't understand why each of them got a one year prison sentence. It was a civil case. Jail is for criminal cases.

I'm glad the site itself was never on trial, only the four individuals. That means TPB will still be online.

How they all got the same sentence was strange to me since Carl Lundström had very little to do with TPB.

I guess I'll wait for the appeals to take place. It will be interesting to see how the Court of appeal and The Supreme Court rule.
- Have a nice explosive day.
