Meet MuWire - new LimeWire fork

LimeWire,  a pale shadow of what it used to be, is once again under attack from the entertainment cartels.

But its code is still out there doing good.

Ask the guys at FrostWire, an excellent, and free, community driven p2p project based on source code released by LimeWire LLC.

Now meet Zab’s MuWire, another free, open-source LimeWire fork created specifically to help people share music.

“It tries to be as minimalist as possible,” he told p2pnet.

“It only shares music files which makes it inherently safer from viruses, especially for non-techies.”

Why minimalist? - we asked Zab, a one-time LimeWire staffer.

“Over the years, I saw a lot of features and bloat added to Limewire,” he said. “I’m was hoping the new interface in 5.0 would take care of it, but its still too complicated.  So I decided to go in the other direction and create something as simple as possible.”

We asked what the differences were.

“No Bittorrent, no buddy list, no music store, nothing to distract the user from getting music,” was the response. “Another positive side effect is that it starts up twice as fast as Limewire 5.”

p2pnet: What does it handle?

Zab: Only to .mp3, .m4a .ogg and .flac files.”

p2pnet: But you’re still going to be a target …

Zab: By minimizing MuWire, we’re not only making it more idiot-proof, users won’t be able to download viruses or share their tax returns — even if they try to.

p2pnet: What about porn?

Zab: It’s family-friendly because there’s no adult material.

p2pnet: What’s coming up?

Zab: One thing I could add to the future plans part is a native interface using SWT.  Java has a bad rep for being slow and while I can’t ditch it completely, I might be able to rewrite the user interface to use native components.  It all depends on free time and how many users want it, so I’m not making any promises.

This looks like it'll be a good LimeWare fork project for music lovers minus the bloat that comes with LimeWare.

Limewire servers ?  :o

You do know Limewire is a Gnutella network client and that is a decentralised network similar to WinMX ?

I agree with the developer on this one, in their efforts to muddy the waters regarding their overall business plan they added too much unneeded and unwelcome items to the official Limewire client. Offshots like Rocketmp3, Frostwire and now this MuWire are all ok but I cant say the Gnutella network is safe enough for anyone I know to use, we may not be the biggest community of filesharers but we are the most savvy when it comes to ensuring the majority of the network is kept safe and technically aware.

am i the only one out there that thinks its funny that ppl only see ogg as a music format and not a container format....

its like saying .avi is a video format.... no... .avi is the container.... it can be just audio if you wanted... and with pretty much any codec you wanted....

same with ogg... its not just 'vorbis' you can put flac audio in .ogg as well as mpeg video or the more common to .ogg; the open source theora video codec as well X_x

Vorbis is great
Theora...not so much lol

And yes it IS capable of handling video but did you happen to read this part?
Quote
The term ‘Ogg’ is commonly used to refer to audio file format Ogg Vorbis, that is, Vorbis-encoded audio in the Ogg container. Previously, the .ogg file extension was used for any content distributed within Ogg, but as of 2007, the Xiph.Org Foundation requests that .ogg be used only for Vorbis due to backward compatibility concerns.
I find this part rather interesting
Quote
The Xiph.Org Foundation decided to create a new set of file extensions and media types to describe different types of content such as .oga for audio only files, .ogv for video with or without sound (including Theora), and .ogx for applications
I've never seen an application in a media container. My guess is that its going to be something like a tarball but i'll have to look into it.

Even more funny is that alot of "100%" GNU systems have support for ogg, but both ogg libraries are BSD licensed.... so in the future they could become like MPEG if they so wished.
