However, Microsoft has failed to remove a long-recognized Windows Explorer security risk from Windows 7, according to security company F-Secure. The "hide extensions" feature, which was present in Windows NT, 2000, XP, and Vista, is also included in the Windows 7 release candidate, The feature could allow virus writers to trick users into opening and running malicious files, he added.
A small brouhaha is erupting over Windows 7 and Intel processors. The hubbub is centered on which Intel processors will not support "XP mode" in Windows 7 and, by extension, which PCs will not support XP mode. Retail laptops may be one of the most prominent segments affected.

and the article continues into some lay offs.

The other major release from the software maker came in the form of layoffs--Microsoft on Tuesday notified more than 3,000 workers that it is eliminating their jobs. The software maker said in January that it would cut up to 5,000 jobs over the next 18 months. It made 1,400 cuts at the time. With the second wave, Microsoft has cut nearly all 5,000 jobs already.

I am with you on turning off the "hide system files" option, but not on turning off the "hide known extensions" feature.

I HATE seeing file extensions. I don't need all of the images within a folder to remind me that they all have .jpg, .png, .gif, or another extension. That's the whole reason why I use different icons for each image type. And if I rename files (as I often do in sets) then I have to remember to add the extension back otherwise it is gets removed during my rename.

My belief has always been anyway that the majority of people who end up accidentally running a script disguised by the icon as just a text file will do so reguardless of the extension being visible or not.
Downloading is an addiction I do not want to give up.

It depends on what your doing.
I change zip to pkv and text to .bat and just to keep some nosey people out of my finances the spreadsheets are passworded and changed to .hlc so that they cant open them.

I believe every setting should be tailored to what the user does on a regular basis and that the defaults should be what works for MOST users. In this case I dont think the defaults met their criteria.

I don't hide extensions because it makes changing the file extension easy (Just press F2). I also open picture files in different programs depending on the file extension. (MsPaint makes jpg files look ugly).

i use the browser for all image formats but .bmp (what they are usually viewed with before downloading anyway)... and i do the same tricks with file extensions ... esp the .txt to .bat one ... that bacon (forested) does...

right click > new text file > edit text file > rename text to bat > run script ;)

then there are times when extensions are just plain wrong.... like an mp3 thats really an mp2... or 'file.zip.mp3' types... just shave off the .mp3 and open it...

I've downloaded a couple CDs from Japan, and they seem to like doing that. They'll put an entire CD in a zip folder with no compression so it will play in WMP with the .zip.mp3 extension. It's just a way to keep CDs organized, I guess.
