IT SEEMS that no one wants MicroSD cards any more and prices are dropping between 15 and 20 per cent lower than chip vendors' quotations.According to Digitimes, device manufacturers are now reluctant to buy microSD cards directly from NAND flash chipmakers because they can find them cheaper in the outside world.Samsung has done its best to keep the price of MicroSD up by restricting the number it releases, but demand in the end market has weakened, resulting in lower microSD selling prices.Module houses told Digitimes that they were asking the chipmakers to lower their quotations to narrow the gap with selling prices.The falling prices have been blamed on SanDisk's recent entry into the white-box market.SanDisk has begun to supply microSD cards to Taiwan-based NAND flash device makers for a cheap price. The flash gear makers then market them as their own.Average prices for 1GB and 2GB microSD slid 4.51 per cent and 4.86 per cent on November 11, according to DRAMexchange.
