Judge Takes Wind Out Of RIAA Lawyers Sails
« on: January 23, 2010, 12:41:37 am »
After crowing for a while now how much they had won a small fortune "on paper" from filesharing extortion victim Jammie Thomas (now married and named Rasset) it seems a judge with common sense has delivered a backswipe to the RIAA and their cash hungry lawyers.

Quote
"The need for deterrence cannot justify a $2 million verdict for stealing and illegally distributing 24 songs for the sole purpose of obtaining free music. Moreover, although Plaintiffs were not required to prove their actual damages, statutory damages must still bear some relation to actual damages.”

So says judge Michael J. Davis in a decision which states Jammie (seen here with her family) now owes Big Music $2,250 instead of $80,000 for each of 24 songs she’s said to have downloaded without permission.

It must be remebered that none of any money gathered by the RIAA or its lawyers for infringement "ambulance chasing" the sick, young kids, the elderly and poor folks  ever hits an artists pocket, no one has yet stepped forward from the RIAA to explain why that is but I think you folks know the answer.
