An Italian minister has stirred up controversy by not only criticizing the efforts of the French to disconnect file-sharers from the Internet, but by also admitting he’s a pirate himself. Interior Minister Roberto Maroni, a musician in a band, believes the solution to online file-sharing lies in a compromise, where music is paid for by advertisers and sponsors

Maroni’s comments follow in the wake of a recent Communications Regulatory Authority report which concluded that not only does piracy fail to create the economic damages claimed by the entertainment industries, but repressive policies and monitoring are unconstitutional, unnecessary and harmful.

When we are dealing with facts the general filesharing picture is pretty clearly something that's of positive benefit to the creative industries however due to old style commercial thinking and outdated creative revenue models that rely on selling pieces of plastic instead of the media itself we will always hear the cries of woe from the incumbent and often overpaid business types who act as middlemen and take the lions share of most artists revenues for little personal effort, the reality of the market of course being that if we cant hear an artists music there is little chance of us purchasing it in any form. When they have understood that happy customers will pay for good music willingly they may well find their profits go back up, calling their customer thieves is simply stupid, short sighted and simply wrong, legally and technically.
