Still Not Connected? Tried Everything?

For anyone not connected please follow these instructions:
**Please write these down or print them for reference***

First I want you to insure that we start fresh...any previous fixes you have used can either be moved to a new folder you make to save for a back up or deleted completely.

1) I want you to download this original hosts file that comes with standard Windows operating systems

https://www.winmxworld.com/files/original_hosts_file.zip

2) Unzip that to your C;\Windows\system32\drivers\etc folder for XP
or C:\Windows folder for 98/ME.

3) Now I want you to uninstall WinMX, if you want your settings to be saved all you need to do is save the Settings.dat and the library.dat file from your existing WinMX folder into that new folder.
Delete any short cuts to WinMX your using now. Desktop or Start Menu ones.
After you uninstall WinMX, please verify that there is no folder in C:\Program Files\WinMX

4) Now I would like you to redownload the Install 2.2.exe from here:
https://www.winmxgroup.com/Install-2.2.exe
Reason for redownload, a few folks didnt get a full download due to the size and speed of the download.
This file should be approx. 1.3MB in size on completion of download.

5) Now reboot the computer for me at this time.

6) Now run the Install 2.2.exe and make a clean installation of WinMX on your computer for XP or 98/ME.

7) Once this has installed if it connects fine for you at his time then you done and ready to use it. You can now add your settings.dat and library.dat files to your new folder of WinMX to get your settings back.

8.) If your using XP and it doesnt connect I want you to shut down WinMX and do a dns flush:

Start > Run type in 'cmd' then hit OK
Then in the dos box type 'ipconfig /flushdns' and hit enter.

9) Now restart your WinMX

Let me know how this went for you

Hi Richard, if your seeing that result from the WinMxGroup patch then I can only suggest you have a firewall switched on that is blocking it.

Perhaps removing any old firewall rules for winmx may do the trick as it will have to ask you again to allow it through, for the initial connection the ports are set to TCP 6699 and UDP 6257.
XP SP2 firewall has a habit of turning itself on at will so please recheck that too :)

Please let me know how things go and if you need more help just drop some details here.

What version of WinMx are you using ?
Your operating system ?
Do you have a router and if so what sort ?

The patch will need to make 2 external connections, one to the blocklist site and one to the peer cache site so watch out for both of those.
You can normally tell if the patch is operating ok and in the correct folder by being able to view the message "Patch Operational" in the upper left corner of winmx.

I'll make an attempt again.

I'm using XP Pro sp2, windows firewall, cable modem.

I started to have these problems when I dld MSN Messenger 7.5, which, for some mysterious reason works for an hour or so, and then will not work (the last time it worked was a week ago). I noticed that when WinMX works, IE, or any other browser of thin client works (the thin client, a FX Order management system, yileds an error message stating te cannot open port 80 HTML, MSN Messenger 7.5, when I use their troubleshooter, sometimes says that there is an error in the Gateway, others time in a key port, a couple of times an IP problem, anything I got from MS regarding this works).

Skype and YIM works all time.

Hey Richardwagner,

This is a new one on me for sure.  We did fine that the Install 1.9 had some incompatibility issues with IE Beta 7.0,
however see no reason for the MSN to be a problem.

I would suggest either to uninstall the MSN and see if this makes a
difference or to Install our hosts file and try that.

By hosts file I mean the original hosts file that came with your Windows Operating system.

If you install this and reboot or try a DNS flush and let me know if it makes any difference please..

Ok Richard have you tried using a hosts file to connect, meaning the modified ones?

https://www.winmxworld.com/files/winmxworld_hosts.zip   Hosts file for connection.

If you have do you also get the same results?

Do you have a router  that could be trying to use the same ports for all outgoing traffic?

I'm using the new host file you sugester and have no router.

Today my laptop was very slow, no spyware nor viruses. Ran Registry Mechanic and found problems and fix them. Still slow. IE worked ad well as Skype and YIM.

I tried to restart but the thing was frozen. I turned off.

When it was back, WinMX worked, got P=9, S=0, pns=6745,

I did a search but nothing was coming, no secondary could log anyway.

I turned off the machine and rebotted, this time MSN Mess worked, also IE, as well as Skype and YIM, Win MX won't. Went through everything again, reinstalle new host files, unisntalled re installed WinMX, flushed DNS, changed ports in firewall, rebotted and nothing. The last time, let the program to autoconfigure ports and test if it can send TCP and receive UDP, it went to the last bar but failed. I config myself and see that firewall had trh ports, but still nothing.

One thing I noticed: if IE works, WinMX won't, the reverse applies.

Often times when you are not successful in getting connected its due to the different types of fixes you have used all being on the computer together.

The best advice I can give you is to read the first post in this thread

https://forum.winmxworld.com/viewtopic.php?p=5587#5587

And write down or print these instructions so that you can do this without this screen open.

If you have any questions just ask us..

But give that a try, its work almost 100% of the time to get folks connected when done right.

Hi Freccia,

Your english is fine.  Unfortunately there is no easy answer to your problem.  This can be caused by many things.  Let me ask you a few questions if I may.

What type of internet connection do you have and what company?
Are you using a router or dsl modem?

What antivirus do you have?

What version of WinMX are you using?
What operating system do you use on your computer?

Thanks

Usually this is a secondary issue, and not as likely to happen on primary.  Its also a known bug in the WinMX Version 3.53, but luckily was fixed in Version 3.54 beta 4 which you have.

The patch wont have an effect on keeping your connections stable, so the change may not have been the patch but instead the version your using.  If you had version 3.53 before the install of the 1.9 patch you might try that again.

You can easily change your WinMX back to version 3.53 by downloading this file:
httpss://archive.winmxworld.com/WinMX/WinMx%20Releases/winmx353.exe

When you get this file just place it into your C:\Program Files\WinMX Folder and let it replace the WinMX.exe file that is there now.
Your patch will work fine with either version.

Also if its possible for you to get a primary connection that might also help.

I hope this helps one or both of your with this problem.. please let me know...
