avi file on dvd not playing smooth
« on: April 20, 2010, 01:27:10 am »
Hi all

I have burned a avi file on to dvd but when I went to play the dvd it does not play smooth like the avi file on the pc. I am using nero 6 and wondering what settings should be set to make sure the file plays smooth when burning to dvd

Cheers

One important setting is the recording speed Goose, it may take a little longer but a recording speed of 4 is what I use and never have any problems with "juddering" disks, speeds of 16 etc are guaranteed to cause problems on many systems and players.
Some folks also try different disk types to resolve poor recording problems, turning the recording speed down is however preferable, having as it does zero cost  :-D

Ill second that ...as a rule of thumb whatever you may be burning the slower the speed you use the better quality you end up with.... for o/s and games iso i tend to go with 2x speed for best results (takes longer but cheaper and quicker than re-burning)

I would dispute burning speed as the cause,
on the basis that you have not supplied enough information for me to come to that conclusion...
I assume you would not have just burnt 1 avi to a full DVD disc... ??
so...
1. How do other files play that are on the disc ?
2. Does this file only stutter in parts of the movie, OR almost equally the whole way through ?
IE.In a regular jitter or just certain places throughout the movie.
3. How long have you used this same type/brand of media you are currently using ?
Is this a disc from the middle of a spindle of 25 or more ?
If you have had any burns fail, with other discs from this spindle or same brand media ?
4. Do you burn with verify mode, which compares the burnt disc's files with the original files on pc ?

Now..

1. If other files on the disc play fine, then maybe it is a decoding/encoding issue with that one file.
2. If this file only stutters in parts, then yes it maybe a read issue related to burn speed or junk media.
3. If you have had many good burns with this same media and no failed discs, using same writing speeds, then could be just this disc
especially if this file just stutters in parts......

I suggest using ImgBurn to burn any files to disc and always make sure verify is checked ;)
(Free software and compact)
Now as far as writing speeds go,
I burn between 15-20 DVD discs either DVD or AVI format at 8X or 16X
with educational material a week for my students
they are played on a variety of different players at the students homes
and rarely do I ever have an issue,
more often than not,
the disc is returned dirty, when it is anyway
LOL

Ok now,
you make me wonder...........
1. is your DVD player avi compatible ?
2. did you use Nero to burn a DATA disc ?
OR
3. did you use Nero to convert the avi to DVD format ?

For memory I used ulead moviefactory 4.0 se. I had to download  and install kcodec files because I got this mesage "video not available cannot find 'vids:xvid' decompressor"

My version of nero is nerovision express  3 SE I did get a message saying that most of the file was ntsc  but I had it save as PAL format, would that make any diffence

Ok, thanks for the info...
Now can you telll me.. when you start your DVD player without a disc in the draw...
The 'boot' screen does it mention "AVI" or "MP4" ???
Or any mention on a sticker on top of the player of "AVI" or "MP4" ???

If this is the case then you may be able to just burn the original file to a disc, "as it is" and it will play...

very good news,
you have been going about things the very hard way....
now get ImgBurn
once you run the program select some avi files to burn to a DVD disc
drop that disc into the dvd player and all should be well..

ImgBurn is so simple ..
"Write Files /Folder to disc"
once you open program ..
on a DVD disc you can fit 5 or 6 700meg ish   AVI files

"the Process be for getting it to work on a standard dvd player"

My best advise ???
Sell the DVD player that you have...
Get what you can for it....
Then put that money towards buying a new DVD player that will.......

There are ways / programs that will convert AVI to DVD format,
but they take time and will only ever let you fit one movie per disc..

So you do have a DVD player that does play the disc you made ???
