whois and dowloading

I  have the normal windows fire wall with xp pro . why can I do a whois on some one and they can not do it to me  that goes for downloading also. I do have other people up and downloading from and to me . any help in this matter will be appreciated.

I've had this problem myself, you can do a whois on yourself, i do often, if it dont show, i refresh connection (on secondary) and obtain a whois on myself, then you can browse yourself & download off yourself to check upload and download, that is what i do,

that is assuming you are not using any other firewall except your windows one and are not using a router (or BT hub) with a built-in firewall,
if you have more than one, they will conflict, make sure you have settings in your windows firewall for TCP & UDP ports,

Thank you Max I do have a router and will recomfigure my router to port forward and that will I hope get rid of the problem

I should have added, of you have a router, it should have a built-in firewall as most have,
you should disable the windows one, it serves no purpose on win XP because its known to allow all incoming connections (so you can not block Microsoft or hackers) but will block all outgoing connections, is your applications/programs,
people thing two firewalls are better, they cause the reverse affect and will conflict each other.

How do you do a whois on yourself??

you enter a room, right click on your name in the user list and you see browse & whois,
you should be able to whois, browse, up & down load to/from yourself, thats a test you can do both as you are correctly connected/set up
