Try contacting some people at sourceforge and see if there are versions avaiable for 98. Being opensource and free. i think that some version will avaiable
Also if you do find such a tool, then please come back here and tell about it so that ithers can use it as well.
I'll try and see if I can find something...

open nap servers may require NT but winmx will work perfectly as an open nap client under 98.. well perfectly as long as you aren't using the beta.. when it'll work ok some of the time & mess with transfers other times
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

Okay, great, thanks for all the positive feedback here, gonna try opennap just as soon as I have the time to sit down and figure it all out. It does look kinda complicated to tell you the truth, from the info at the link you gave me. Lotsa steps, some lookin' kinda confusing. Will be back in touch if I get stuck...you know it!

Thanx again -- Joanne.

OK, I did it! That is, I did the opennap procedure....on my boyfriend's Win XP computer (remember, I have 98, which you mentioned should also work okay with opennap I realize). First, will it work okay if I don't have WinMX version 3.53 on my machine? I think I have the one just prior to that.

Next, do I go to the Search page to look up songs with the "OpenNap Protocol Networks" long tab selected on the Networks page, or the "WinMX Peer Network" long tab selected, or does it even matter, do you get to the exact same Search page either way (it looks like the exact same page).

Next, after I connect to some opennap networks, I click on the "Stop attempts" button so it will stop connecting to more opennaps and save resources to search for songs (I'm on a dialup modem). But then, when I go back to that OpenNap Protocol Network screen, it's trying to connect more of those red servers again, it keeps on trying everytime I look.

I've also noticed I'm not really getting any better or more search results, I still can't find the oddball tunes I've been looking for. Should I "Remove" the opennap servers I've got and try downloading new ones in hopes of getting better results the next go-round?

Coupla more questions re. opennap --

I noticed the font is coming up white for some search results in the "Status/Server" column on the right. Is this to identify opennap results? And why are all those white results in that column coming up as WEBSITES (usually the number of songs offered by the particular user is listed in that column)?

I don't understand what you mean by websites, but opennap results have the network to which the user is connected to along with the name. If that's whatbyou mean.

ALSO please note:
Optnnap files CANNOT multisource downlaods. so better not click all the yellow results. You only download the same file over and over again

OpenNap will work with any WinMX Version.

Yes the Search screen you see from either is the same one, to select only certain OpenNap Servers to search or only WInMX you click the button marked 'All Available Networks' a drop down will appear and you can pick and choose there.  Leave it as is to search all.

Right Click them and choose Disconnect instead of Stop Attempt.  Stop Attempt seems to only stop that particular attempt.

You can remove and add servers all you like, yes some are probably better for your 'oddball' then others ppls 'oddball'.. so yer thats not a bad idea.

Those do show white, they also are websites because OpenNap users are listed by Server aka website.  So this also means that your shares will have all the servers your on behind your name for others.

Hope this helps some...

Yes, thanks for answering ALL my questions (I did get inquisitive, didn't I) so concisely. Gonna give it another go, gonna try it on my Win 98 machine next.

Re. removing certain servers and keeping others, I'm not sure how to know which are more productive and which less. Is that website address under "Server/Status" the same one I'll see under the long listing turning from yellow and red to green, under whatever heading (I forget, some "Protocol" tab I think), is that how to tell?

Also, is OpenNap okay with a slightly older version of WinMX, i.e. other than the latest 3.53 version?

OpenNap should work fine with 3.54b4, 3.53 and 3.31. Versions before those im not sure of.... speaking of wikipedia; i re-wrote that page :D... and also wrote a winmxgroup page... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinMXGroup

Whilst Im more than happy to see links to the WinMxGroup site on the wiki it helps if your not confusing this site with that one, folks reading the Wiki as it stands will not find tutorials or the archive on the WinMxGroup site, perhaps another edit would be in order to clarify the two sites positions  :?

Cheers Happy Dude, I,m sure some folks think they are helping by trying to change facts that they are uncomfortable with but in reality the wiki admin folks will take steps against those destroying pages as they have been doing.

It would be nice if they made a contribution to the Wiki rather than follow a lame agenda of destruction that shows their IQ is minimal.

Once again thanks for the effort  8)

No offence but it's be better to contribute in the winmx or winmxgroup ones. As they have not been deleted so far.
Plus they are more likely to be read by people.

Hmmm, this is weird, I don't see the latest questions/answers in here about how to specifically get Gnutella as an OpenNap server.

Oh well, here's a new one - With OpenNap I noticed you don't get the notation under the "Status/Server" column (far-right) re. whether a file is available or how many are in queue. Is that right, you can't tell if the file is available until you double-click it and go to the Transfers page?

Also, sometimes after I double-click a song to download it, it will come up in the Transfers page as "busy (queueable)", rather than just ENTERING me in queue automatically like usually happens. Why is that?

The thread was going wildly off topic JJ007, so I snipped it into two, sorry if you found this disconcerting, please post open nap questions in the following thread, cheers  8)

No problem, just weird when I clicked on like 3 links I got in emails directing me to tech replies and I wound up here, vs. the new thread where my replies actually awaited me.

Got there alas tho via your link, thanx.

Merry Xmas btw!
