I downloaded "ubuntu-6.10-desktop-i386.iso" off of torrents and there's a small problem. In the Wine download archive the oldest version they have for download for 6.10 is "Ubuntu Edgy (6.10): # Wine 0.9.24, -dev"
you can use the source downloads if there's no binary package available

Ok. I installed "wine_0.9.12-winehq2-ubuntu-5.10-1_i386.deb" from here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=6241&package_id=174803 (There weren't any links to 0.6.12.)

Then I installed MozillaControl16.exe so now WinMX opens but it doesn't connect. It just sits there and says, "connecting" I have it set to Windows 2000 mode. The link I used was in this topic it was:

http://crossover.codeweavers.com/redirect/mozcontrol

I can't get WinMX, rabbit, or anything to list the channels. I just want to chat. :(

did you use the winmxgroup installer?

if so, check that the dll override went in to the wine configuration properly
run winecfg and make sure there is an entry set for oledlg to use native then built in
also make sure the oledlg.dll file is in the winmx directory

Yes. I did. I used "Install-3.0-3.54b4.exe"

I did that it looks like everything is setup correctly. I changed it from windows 2000 mode to windows xp and tried it and switched it back. I also added WinMX to the application, just under where it says, "default" and added the dll file. Now it says, "command failed" every time I open WinMX, but WinMX stays opened. It's not a fatal crash.

make sure the oledlg.dll file is in the winmx directory
How do I do that?

Ok. I made sure olegld.dll was in the winmx folder, and the native and then built in setting was correct. I just can't connect, and I get a "command failed" error message on startup.

I also put ws2_32.dll in the rabbit folder and set it to native and then built in. It goes from trying to find the carrot list to negotiating, handshake, and negotiating, but it's not putting the channel names on the screen. Give me the WinMxWorld channel name. I want to see if I can get in without having the channels list.

WinMxWorld.com Help_A06F7657BABE

and have you tried 0.9.16? that version is known to work, older ones sometimes work and sometimes don't (as they break and fix things each release), and versions after 0.9.16 don't (they broke it, but didn't fix it yet)... only one confirmed to work is 0.9.16, several others do but not sure about confirming which ones specifically do and don't

Now that KM mentions it - I'm pretty sure 0.9.12 is one of those that won't work...

You can find older wine packages for Ubuntu here.
Just install with your package manager, or even a double-click on the downloaded file might do ;)

@ Nylly444. If you read my 1st comment, I've already been there. KM suggested getting the source package, but I don't know where to get that. I can't find the version I need to make WinMX work. ubuntu edgy only goes to version 0.9.24 in that link. :(

First I'd try out the package for Dapper, it might just work.

If it doesn't I already offered to send you the source since I can't seem to find it in the wine archives anymore either.
Just let me know :-)

Oh, and check out the recommended packages for building wine here:  http://wiki.winehq.org/Recommended_Packages

I've just set up PCLinuxOS on several partitions alongside a partition containing Windows on my Hard Drive.  It works marvelously and is user friendly in its likeness to Windows.

The bottom line is how do I install WinMXv3.54Patched on PCLinuxOS?

currently i'd say the easiest way would be pull KM's 3.0 installer from the archive run that (which won't connect.. but will do the wine config) then replace the dll in winmx program folder with the one from the connection page

but you'll probably get more sense from an actual linux user (i'm not)

Specifically which one does the 'Wine' thing? All three at http://winmxworld.com/archive/KingMacro/WinMX%20Connection%20Fix/ are Widows installers.

First, go get this: http://dodownload.filefront.com/5192038//4073c15bfd4b745a9d6df88dc7cb0ccd8771dc407b0a35e54465e5e85a5ce86f585aa73d0b6e4ffa
go to the folder where you downloaded it, open a terminal and become root.
do a         rpm -Uv wine-0.9.16-mdk.i586.rpm
then install Mozilla active x control 1.6.  then install WinMX using KM's installer.
(when it asks "Open With?"  enter the path /usr/bin/wine   to launch an .exe)
then go to home, hit view and show hidden files, go to
.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/drivers and create the etc folder. go in it and create a text file and name it hosts.
then run the new WinMX patch release. the warning box will come up and say the hosts file is locked, and show some other odd error, disregard and hit ok, then start WinMX  :-)

That RPM is actually for Mandriva, But I Tried the one made for PCLinuxOS and wine simply did not work.
the wine-0.9.16-mdk.i586.rpm worked in under a minute.    hope this helps...
