WinMX Under Linux

How to get WinMX Running on linux (or any *nix system)

1. install wine (packages avaliable for most popular package based distros)
2. download the patched winmx from www.winmxgroup.com
3. when it's installed it will launch winmx, in future run it again by clicking the icon it should have made

seems too simple... especially when you consider certain others claiming you need wine then some "winmx for linux" package then run installers then modify system files...

just one word of warning, some wine versions work with winmx others do not - so if it doesn't work then it's probably not something you have done (as long as the installer runs anyway it means wine is working), the best thing to do is try it and if it doesn't work then try a different version

In my experience any version higher than 0.9.16 does in fact NOT work, so anyone having problems please try installing that.
It should then ask you to download and install Mozilla ActiveX on first run, which you should do.

well
i  tryed wine 9.16 and everything goes good until installing active x (due to my system probably)
active x wont install

so the version of wine i use is Wine 20050725(alpha version i think)
everything work but the weird thing is all my extra windows pop up on the next desktop.

open source all the way

which activex have you installed?

If you go here you will see two versions of the mozilla activex control.
I'm not sure which version you need under which conditions (may be in connection with the windows version you're telling wine to emulate).

I have mine (0.9.16, self compiled) set to emulate windows xp and am using MozillaControl1712.exe - which works just fine.

If that's not what you're using give it a try, maybe it helps...

Btw, the reason why any newer versions won't work is that instead of using the mozilla activex control the wine team made their own gecko engine which doesn't work with the embedded IE window in winmx (yet).

works here :P

But you're right, winmx doesn't need the update bar - which is all the activex is for.
Unfortunately it's become a fatal error in later versions if it does not work, so winmx closes down after starting.
I haven't found a way around that yet, hehe.

Copying things works for me now, but didn't in earlier versions - maybe because this is a self compiled version?

I got the source for 0.9.16, let me know if you wanna try and compile yourself :-)

I have Ubuntu Linux, and WINE 9.16, and those activeX things, but how do you get WINE to see the ActiveX?  Btw the version of Ubuntu is Dapper I believe

it's not something important for winmx, if it doesn't work then i'd just ignore it, it's only for the update bar :-)

which wine version do you have?

versions after 0.9.16 don't use an activex control for the IE window for the update bar, instead of something that's completely compatible with all programs they decided it's so much politically better to use an open source one that's bundled with it, which of course only impliments some of the stuff that programs might use

when political ideals come before "what works best" you know something is going down hill, and it does give me huge doubts about the future of the wine project... especially as they didn't leave any possibility to go back to the old working method as far as i'm aware

Hi,

having trouble with this issue, have posted in an Ubuntu Newgroup to see if anyone there can help, wondered if anyone here could help also, followed the advice in this thread and plenty of other places too. Have copied the post I made to the NG as it covers most salient points I think. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am a newbie to Linux and trying it now on my main PC as an XP replacement
to see how I get on (installed on Tuesday) but been fiddling about on and
off for about a month with LiveCDs and an old laptop. So far so good, can
do most of what I need to do with native apps, even got network drives
mapped to my 2k3 server solidly enough to play music/movies without Amarok
thinking they are a remote location :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated with a big stumbling block. I am
having major problems getting the only windows app I want (Winmx) to run
with Wine.

Am running Ubuntu Edgy with KDE. Installed wine 0.9.22 using Synaptic. The
WinMX installer runs fine, and the configuration wizard, but just before
the app loads properly it fails silently.  I have found out through
research that 1) Winmx will only run using Wine 0.9.16 and below. 2) There
is a problem with activex and the embedded browser in the menu to notify of
updates.

Uninstalled 0.9.22 and installed 0.9.16 and then when I try to run WinMX I
get the notification "This application is requesting an ActiveX browser
object but the Mozilla ActiveX control is currently not installed. Do You
wish to download and install it?" A small step forward, at least it's not
so silent.

Hitting either Yes or No I then get a silent failure - in the updater and
WinMX.

Found out that others have similar problem with various apps with a browser
component and that the answer is to use "MozillaControl1712.exe". Installed
this under Wine, installer runs OK until it pops up with "The mozilla
control was unable to detect where your mozilla layout libraries may be
found. You will now be shown a directory picker for you to locate them."

It suggests an example in the picker "c:\mozilla\bin" (but this does not
exist in my virtual Windows directory). Without a location the install
fails (created the suggested directory too and chose that - still fails.) I
even installed the windows version of Firefox under Wine to see if that
created the required directory - no joy (but Windows Firefox runs fine in
Wine btw.)

Stupid thing is, the browser component is irrelevant to the operation on
WinMX but because it causes the error the whole app fails, personally I'd
be happy to live without ActiveX if I could :)

Adept and Synaptic have no packages relating to ActiveX that I can find.

Sorry that was a bit of a ramble, I hope I have included enough relevant
info for any gurus to maybe offer some hints (or some blindingly obvious
thing I have overlooked lol)

Cheers

Well the plugin is needed for the update bar to work that's all......
I don't think it has any other use.

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

Yup, but unfortunately MX just silently fails and will not run without it. Anyway have worked out a fix. I will post it here in case anyone else is in the same boat and comes across this page.

I have probably gone about it all wrong, and broken all sorts of Linux rules :) but it works.

Somebody in the NG pointed me to winmx4linux, I thought "great, someones hacked the update bar out". No joy, was just an installer for 3.31 to run in a terminal in Linux and put bits and bobs in the right Wine directories. It didnt work and failed the same way; but... using the winmx4linux installer (being terminal based) let me see the errors as they happened so gave me some clues, particularly ".......builtin CLSID_WebBrowser from SHDOCVW.DLL"

Googled that and got this page http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2004-September/012879.html

Tried adding the registry key and running MX again, no joy. So, using the windows version of firefox running in wine I just follwed the url listed in the reg entry. This installed the plugin perfectly and winMX ran :)

(url, run in windows firefox "http://crossover.codeweavers.com/redirect/mozcontrol")

Just make sure you have the windows version of Firefox installed using wine.

This was quite a painful and long winded experience with lots of trial and mainly error. But now I know it should be easy if I have to do it again.

1) Install Wine
2) Install Firefox for Windows
3) Run http://crossover.codeweavers.com/redirect/mozcontrol in Firefox
4) Install WinMX

Hope this helps anyone in the same boat.

It seems they removed the mozilla activex from the winehq site, that's why it won't install.

However, you don't need to install the windows version of firefox.
I just tried and it works fine if you just get the mozilla activex control from your link, install it and then run winmx. So it's really quite simple:

1. Install wine 0.9.16 (or an earlier version)
2. Download mozilla activex and install (seems version 1.7.2 won't work properly, this links to 1.6 which seems ok)
2. Install winmx from www.winmxgroup.com.

Ahah, so it was an error specific to 1.7.2. then?

Presumably, if I had used 1.6 in the first place I wouldn't have had all the crap with the "The mozilla
control was unable to detect where your mozilla layout libraries may be
found. You will now be shown a directory picker for you to locate them."  and subsequent failure then?

exactly.

I tried version 1.72 and got the exact same error.
Seems it's missing some files and I also seem to recall there were several versions of it that went with specific windows versions or something.

Anyway, version 1.6 seems to work with it fine, so people can use that :-)

Btw, everything wine related can be found in the hidden folder .wine in your home directory, you can easily move or remane that and do a new setup to try, that's what I did to test this.
Just in case you want to try and start over ;)

Been spending way too much time in that folder sorting this problem lol. But thanks.

It's all working now so I don't want to upset the apple cart now :) But I have saved the file just in case.

I downloaded "ubuntu-6.10-desktop-i386.iso" off of torrents and there's a small problem. In the Wine download archive the oldest version they have for download for 6.10 is "Ubuntu Edgy (6.10): # Wine 0.9.24, -dev"

http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/index.html

Does that mean I'm going to have to download the latest version (or version 1.7.2) and follow the exact same steps as F'lar?
