Program Files\WinMX\settings.dat constantly updates
« on: November 28, 2006, 04:11:06 pm »
I'm using PowerQuest DataKeeper 5.0 to back up my files.  DataKeeper automatically backs up a file whenever it is saved.  I've noticed that the WinMX\settings.dat file is saved every few seconds!  No other file behaves like that.  Can anyone throw light on this?  Ted

Hi Tedcloak,

Yes the settings.dat files saves information that is 'ongoing' in your WinMX, things like info on incomplete files, settings, room favorites.. etc.. so as you can imagine esp with the incomplete file info (saves as your downloading so that if something happens you dont loose everything you got) it will constantly be changing.

Its ok and best to allow to do its work so your settings and files are always intact.

Try removing the winmx folder from your backup. It doesn't  contain pretty much any important stuff other than what me here said (although I don't feel that's something worth backing up.
If something happens then you can reinstall winmx and all will be well.
I think it will also free up CPU processing power due to constant backup's

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

I've found using data keeper it's best set to cover the importsnt folders only (my documents, my music, email other & data folders you may have created, otherwise it uses a lot of space & resources saving files pointlessly..

If disaster strikes, Windows & programs can always be reinstalled from cd or things like adobe reader re downloaded, in fact the vast majority will REQUIRE you to do this, & the reinstalled system will run better, because you won't have backed up & restored the endless inevitable errors that creep into windows systems, causing the exact sort of disaster that the restore is recovering from..

That way things you can't easily recreate are backed up, & those you can don't matter anyway, you can easily re create them.. plus after the disaster you get a nice clean relatively error free install.. instead of one cluttered with junk to the point it's *almost* ready to crash & take everything with it (it just did remember, or you wouldn't be restoring)....
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

Gents, thanks for all your help and for being so quickly responsive.  I've reviewed the DataKeeper log and set DK to  ignore the main sources of confusion.  Sincerely, Ted
