This is a nice start for a patch. but have any of you actually tested its effectiveness? are you using your own compiled version of the dll or the one that is in the zip file. as the one in the zip shows non of its internal gubbins but one you have compiled you will be able to see.

Now im not saying their is anything wrong with this patch, i havent tried it, i havent compiled it, and i wont, I wish the developer luck in what he is doing but the ordinary user should exercise caution while using this patch. You have no idea of what bugs or anything is going on.

Not meaning to be all doom and gloom anyway, i for one am always happy to see forward motion and the source looks fine to me. I do like how he mentions he will add filtering soon like its going to be easy lol, but yes.

I totally support this patch because it provides an alternative for ppl like me that are on a network and simply just having no luck at all with KM's patch and dont wanna switch to pie. Or people that simply just dont trust KM's stuff anymore. As far as whats inside I'm hearing that its a basic blocking patch with non pie caches etc. Does the average user need to know more? I'm having nothing but good results so far but if that changes I'll be sure to post feedback.

As far as the .net framework goes I had 3.0 on one pc and 2.0 on the other and needed the dll files. Some people are telling me they didnt need the dll so I guess it depends on whats on your system.  :)

What tiny is saying is it might not be wise for everyone especially ppl with limited experience jumping on the bandwagon and installing this patch not knowing how things are going to turn out atm...............perhaps exercising a little caution until such a time as things have been fully trialed and tested to make sure there are no network problems with it might be a wise approach..... afterall unique is not such a unique name as it might imply lol

As for not trusting kms stuff anymore its the people here that monitor the patches that keep them safe & aware of any problems...... has anyone even thought for a minute that this could be another stunt to hit the network?.......not likely but entirely possible .....as i said perhaps caution is the best route for the immediate future.

Fair enough, I'm sure that the coders are looking inside of it and if theres something dangerous about it I will definately stop using it. For now though, I'm low on options so I'm gonna give it go. I would've prefered something closed sourced from someone we all know and trust but that just didnt happen.

I agree its a great option for people who thought they was out of them and if it works for these people then fair enough ......the more on the network the better for all concerned i just like to exercise a little caution in these matters until people a lot cleverer than me can make an informed decision on the merits & if its safe to use mainstream and a way forward  :)

@raven; my bad -- MSVC runtimes are installed with .NET version 1.1 ... apparently they arent in the new versions....

for all; direct link to the full MSVC package; http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=32BC1BEE-A3F9-4C13-9C99-220B62A191EE&displaylang=en

shouldnt need to put any runtime .dlls in the winmx directory after installing this cos it -should- put them in the system path.. (which will make it easier to run other MSVC apps like robomx)

Its not just network problems that are a issue if this patch went global. personally i cant see any but its the way this patch obtains the blocklist. It would increase network traffic to this site 10 fold and isnt resitliant to any form of attack upon this site if it ever happened. But anyway, not meaning to blow it out in flames. its a great start and as far as im aware he now knows how to make the patch get the lists from the caches instead of this site so i look forward to the next installment.

I have also expressed my concern over the way this patch fetches the blocklist and the load problems it 'could' create for our web servers however, at present it only fetches the list once when it initialises and the author has been notified of the more superior method of fetching the list via telnet directly from the caches, hopefully he will implement that too  :D

just noticed thier is a version two. seems this new version now only uses the caches supported by this side as a last resort if all the pie caches fail. Suppose at least thier is forward motion.

Yeah I took the time to look inside they added pie caches and like you said 1 last resort wmw cache. Still gets the blocklist through this site instead of telnet. Looks like they're adding a third party patch too but I'm no expert and I never looked in the 1st one. Like all things winmx I'm gonna figure out how to edit it to meet my needs.

I am disappointed that a step backwards has been taken in using the Pie caches on fixed IP,s, the whole point of having dns is so caches can join and leave the infrastructure without affecting the end user or having to release a new patch each time, has no one learned these simple lessons ?

The author has not been asked to add these caches, as you well know, i am keen to see the removal of Sabres caches. I would presume he thinks he is giving his patch maximum appeal.

My apologies if you feel this was directed at yourself Nobby, Unique is the man to balme for what amounts to a short sighted modification likely to cause some form of disruption in the future, this was even mentioned by himself on vladds site as a reson for not including them in the first place.

I am happy also that you have taken the time to discuss this with us over the weekend and look forward to helping things go smoothly in deploying this blocking solutiion once your happy that it fits the pie specs.

I would think this is an oversight on his part, nothing more, lets see how it plays out, ofc he may not have quite the understanding of the politics involved and the desire to see Sabre and his Riaa supports moved along asap.
