As the country rolls out its 'three strikes' anti-piracy legislation, Smartorrent has offered to cloak users' identities so they can continue filesharing.
TorrentFreak reports that 2,500 of the site's 1.7m registered users have signed up to the SmartVPN service, which costs €5 (£4.37) a month.
Smartorrent co-founder Clever told TorrentFreak, “Since the adoption of this new Hadopi law we thought about starting a VPN service. We wanted to give our beloved users the ability to keep downloading safely by using our VPN servers"
It was predictable that operations like this would start up.
