You can't flush DNS with WinMX actually running, you need to completely exit the program, I'd suggest exiting IE & any other programs using the internet also if you attempt it.

Although that said it shouldn't be needed on XP, only 2000 with service pack 3 or under..

If you've connected (light green on networks page) flushing DNS is redundant anyhow, the simple fact you're connected proves it's unneccessary.  Please post the specific issue you're trying to resolve this way & I or someone will consider the likely solution.

Here are a couple of things to try in order.. go to winmx settings & try turning search thread duty cycle (under WinMX Peer Network) down from 80% to 40 or 50%

If that fails to decrease the effect on system performance much, try making a secondary connection, rather than a primary, which reduces the hit as you're not then processing other people's searches.

/me is running short on ideas..

Which fix are you using?  the install1.9.exe from here? or the hosts file fix?

If you're using a hosts file fix, it's reported in some cases to slow your computer, apparently the fix for that is to change the dns client service startup type from automatic tho manual.. at least so I read in forum at another place.. it's in control panel > administrative tools > services

Though I think it's a complex enough fix I'd be suggesting the install1.9 patch instead...

By the way, I did set up my dns to manual.  I can follow directions, didnt know what I was doing but followed the paths set and it shows manual.

Just thought I would let you know.

Thanks again

Ok, one last setting i can think of to play with..
well two

In Settings first make sure on the WinMX Peer Network bit that search thread priority is set to Idle

Then it depends on what the issue is what to try next..

If it's the PROGRAM that's responding slowly then on Miscellaneous in settings try increasing the Main thread priority from Normal to Above Normal (no higher or you'll slow everything else right down)

If it's your PC that's struggling with WinMX running try REDUCING the same setting to "Below Normal"

You'll have to restart WinMX for these changes to come into effect (I think).

Also one last thing to make sure of is that you're not trying to use BOTH patches.. that causes all kinds of odd effects...
