Search issue
« on: September 03, 2011, 10:44:09 am »
Hi can anyone help
When I am searching for a film or music, i initially pick up the chosen item, then it also starts to pick up everthing else that person has in there files.
As you can imagine this is confusing, and not good if there is any porn and crap on there files
Any ideas.

If porn is coming up in your search list, I think it's there to be shared. As for all the other files coming up, if you have not read already, the program is having some problems with search functions. From what you have said, I figure you have already learned how to use it in it's current condition.
If you get good results with your first search and the list stops for a moment, take that moment to manually hit the stop button. Or learn how to use open nap functions and chat rooms for the sure fire way to get the files your looking for.

Hello everyone,
I am having a problem with searching for files and getting a bunch of garbage or songs by artist that I never requested. I have tried putting in the artists name and the name of the song with the same results. Can anyone help, Please!

I've been away from WinMX for a while, but I recently installed it on my new computer. I'm getting all kinds of junk on the search results. If I type in a movie, I get hundreds of responses with garbage symbols and non-related video files. If I'm lucky, I get one or two files with the movie I'm searching for after laboriously scrolling through all the results. Did I do something wrong when I first installed WinMX? It worked so well for me in the past.

Thanks

The results are not the effect of an incorrect install, they are the effect of an attack on the network which is able to detect your search packets and send unlreated results back.

This has been going on for over half a year... maybe it's time to collect donations so you can hire someone who knows what they are doing? this is just plain ridiculousness and I'm getting fed up with "working on it".

You could check with some of the other groups, maybe they are having more luck.

What other groups?

I think I was just being defensive. As far as I know there aren't any other groups actively developing a solution. Not to say there aren't any, maybe there are.

Look I know you're frustrated, we're all frustrated. It's annoying when you remember someone who might have developed the file you're after, but you cant find them because the host of the room they're in is left with their optimal choice being to run the room offline. You can't search for it at that time either because the search function is feeding back unrelated results.
We all feel it. You're not alone.

Chinye55, this is not about money, even having a sackful wont help us any and brings with it further complications.

The problem that's causing us the biggest headaches is winmx itself, we have folks working on a solution and some progress has indeed been made however not enough progress, there are many in built protocol flaws in winmxs main networking routines and to replace these all winmx clients will be affected.
To complete a solid fix is requiring the construction of a whole new set of routines and new routines to prevent the attacker , this is akin to remaking a quarter of the client and then getting it to work with the old client seamlessly, its easy to think all this is nothing in the hands of a highly paid coder but looking into this a little deeper reveals its not a trivial job even for an expert, some folks have said even half a fix is something but I disagree strongly as if we release something that's not 100% bombproof folks will feel let down and have no confidence in future projects so theres more at stake here than simply chasing the attackers latest methods and allowing him to set the agenda, its either a full fix or no fix its that simple, the community would be run ragged and lose valuable supporters if folks hopes where dashed repeatedly.

If others wish to club together to pay for a coder then they should do so but as Silicon will tell you, wmw will not take part in any such enterprise. All staff and coders here are volunteers and work for nothing, that's always ensured only the right type of people are here to support the network and not those looking to enrich themselves.

Bringing money into play with P2P is always a bad ideal due to lawsuits.  I think the best way to even release a client would be to do it anonymously without given the identity of the original authors or coders.  If this could be done then there would be no one to sue other than the users breaking copyright laws which in turn would prevent any court order demanding that the network be shut down. If no one knows who is responsible for the creation of the network or client then there is essentially no one to pressure into shutting down the network. All they can do is put pressure on the cache servers which would not be enough if the network is truly decentralized.  At this point I wonder if the more realistic goal would be to continue working on a new client, and not be so concerned if the new client is compatible with the old client.  Make a new client as much possible like the old one except update the protocols, and fix any known flaws in the protocols.  I really don't understand why people are so worried about making sure it will be compatible with the current network.  Everyone will need to migrate to the new client anyways when it is complete.  Just make it as much like the old client as possible, and create a new network.  This may be a much simpler, and easier solution than the patch that is being presently worked on.  It may take a while to complete the client, but in the long run I'm sure this would be a better solution.  If progress has been made on the new patch then just use those ideals with the new client.

Progress is continuing in both areas, the community is not placing all its eggs in a single basket nor would you expect that given the history of winmx.

Please be patient and rest assured while it may seem quiet out front all resources are working on continuous research and testing of possible areas of further progress.

When we believe we have something good enough to tackle the current flood of script kiddy generated traffic we wont be keeping it a secret  :-D

GS are you saying that coders are currently coding on the new client? All the post in the past I have read said that the new client was put on hold due to the attacks, and also because the coders were needed to work on the patch.

Yes I can confirm that there is coding going on with a new version of a primary client, its not been a secret but just not broadcast too heavily to allow those working on it to make progress rather than answer questions or debate features, the staff here are being kept informed regarding progress and receive test vers that show off progress so its not a hot air project but its also many months away from being completed.

I have given you guys faith for the past 6 months... my room list doesn't load, i get trash in my search results, it takes ages to connect... what is the point of this network anymore if it doesn't work?

That's not a question we can answer for you Chinye, we can only answer what the point of the network is for ourselves. It's really a question you will need to ask yourself, the community means many things to many people.
I'm sure many of the community ask themselves the same question often enough and there are still many members in the community.
Perhaps they see something you have missed.
